While the 2025 Ioniq 5 became the first non-Tesla vehicle to ship with native NACS port built in that allows it to take advantage of Superchargers directly, Hyundai has good news for owners of its other electric vehicles, too.
It just announced that all current Hyundai electric vehicle owners will receive a free Tesla adapter to top up at the more than 20,000 Supercharger stations available in the US. These are similar to the Lectron Tesla Supercharger NACS to CCS adapter on Amazon, so Hyundai basically saves its EV owners $160 in expenses they needed to shell out to take advantage of Tesla opening its Supercharger network to Hyundai and Kia electric vehicles.
In fact, it was precisely a Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 that were the first non-Tesla vehicles caught testing Superchargers with native NACS ports, so the adapters can most likely be used for Kia EVs as well, or a similar free NACS adapter announcement will soon follow from Kia.
The South Korean conglomerate has been increasing its EV sales in the US exponentially, becoming the second-largest electric vehicle maker after Tesla as it rides on the wings of its modern 800V powertrain with fast charging, efficient long-range drivetrains, and competitive pricing.
The free Tesla NACS adapters will start shipping to Hyundai and Genesis electric vehicle owners in the US early in 2025, while the SVP of product planning and mobility strategy of Hyundai North America reminds that more electric vehicles with native NACS ports are on the horizon:
To accelerate EV adoption, we started by listening to our current owners. These adapters will make DC fast-charging more convenient for current owners. Plus, the NACS port on new models like the upcoming Ioniq 9 along with improvements to our digital charging ecosystem, will further enhance the customer experience for future EV drivers. Our goal is to make the transition to electric seamless.
