Tesla operates one of the most extensive public charging networks globally but is still trying to make holiday traveling easier for EV owners. The American company is tackling public rapid charging congestion by rolling out the MegapackCharger, a portable charging station.
MegapackChargers are basically Supercharger stations that Tesla can quickly set up anywhere. They come with 8 V3 stalls mounted on semi-truck trailers. Their mobility allows them to be dispatched to hotspots where more chargers are needed. However, perhaps the most interesting feature of the MegapackCharger is the in-built batteries, which can store up to 3 MWh of energy, enough to charge about 75 cars at 250 kW.
The MegapackChargers connect to the internet using SpaceX’s Starlink internet service, another example of integration between two sister companies. This allows drivers to see their availability on Tesla’s navigation system in real-time, just like normal Superchargers.
While Tesla could theoretically set them up anywhere, the company has been placing them close to existing Supercharging stations, which are already connected to the grid. The proximity means the batteries can be recharged using a Supercharger cabinet when usage is low at night.
Tesla has activated MegapackChargers in California, Nevada, and Ohio. These chargers have the advantage of charging faster than the nearby V2 Superchargers, which can deliver only 150 kW.
