The Tesla Cybertruck finished 2024 as the US's best-selling pickup truck, but the tables have turned. According to new vehicle registration figures from S&P Global Mobility (via Automotive News), the Ford F-150 Lightning has regained the number one spot.
US auto buyers registered 7,126 Cybertrucks in the Q1 2025, compared to 7,913 for the Lightning. The gap was more apparent in March when the former amassed 2,170 and the latter, 2,598. The Chevrolet Silverado EV took third place with 2,383, trailed by the GMC Sierra EV (1,249), Rivian R1T (1,727), and GMC Hummer EV.
The Cybertruck slipped out of the US top ten EV list in March, after hanging on to the ninth position in January and February.
Tesla has struggled to sell the made-of-steel Cybertruck in its home market, despite accumulating reservations in the millions. Besides the alienating effect of CEO Elon Musk's recent politics on some potential customers, the Cybertruck has had its fair share of troubles with recalls. The EV maker has tried to stimulate demand by offering discounts and other promotions.
Ford, however, might not be able to hang on to the first position for long. The American automaker reported only 1,720 Lightning sales in April. It sold 8,927 units in the first four months of 2025, a drop of 9 percent compared to the same period last year.
