More EV makers are trying to get a piece of the Chinese electric SUV pie. Mazda is also throwing its hat in the ring, according to information gleaned from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) database. The carmaker is bringing the Arata Concept to the market with the EZ-60 in August 2025.
The Mazda EZ-60 is built on the EPA platform, which simplifies production by stacking key components such as the battery pack, electric motor, and chassis to optimize efficiency. The platform was developed in conjunction with Chinese Changan.
Mazda went with a futuristic take on the front, with a prominent lip flanked by relatively thin headlights and framed by an LED daytime running light strip. On the rear, the LED continues as a taillight bar above the MAZDA styling. An “EV” badge differentiates the purely electric version from the hybrid or range-extender electric vehicle (EREV).
The database entry shows that the EZ-60 is 4,850 mm long, 1,935 mm wide, and 1,620 mm high, riding on a 2,902 mm wheelbase.
On the inside, Mazda adopted a minimal approach. The focal point is a 26.45-inch screen, where drivers can access settings and other functions. The cockpit includes a flat-bottom steering wheel.
Other features include heated front seats that can also offer massages. The center console can charge phones wirelessly and store items underneath.
In terms of performance, the battery electric vehicle (BEV) version produces 255 hp that draws power from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with undisclosed capacity or driving range. However, the EREV model adds a 96.6 hp 1.5 L gasoline range extender but can last nearly 100 miles on the battery alone.
Mazda has accumulated 20,000 orders for the EZ-60 even though pricing details are not available yet. However, it is expected to cost between RMB 150,000 ($20,820) and RMB 300,000. The SUV is competing with the likes of the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 6. It is unlikely that the EZ-60 will make it out of China.
