It is not a secret that the Sony PlayStation 5 has seen tremendous success since its November 2020 launch. According to Sony’s Q2 2025 earnings report, the company has managed to ship a total of 80.3 million PS5 consoles to date. This is quite impressive when we consider that the Xbox Series console sales, the direct competitors to the PS5, are reportedly less than half of the PS5.
Per the figures listed on Wikipedia, the Sony PS5 has already overtaken the lifetime sales of the Xbox One, which reportedly stands at above 58 million units. Things aren’t much better for the Xbox Series consoles either. Microsoft has seemingly only managed to move just over 28 million Xbox Series S | X consoles since launch.
In other words, the PS5 has sold close to three times as much as the Xbox Series consoles and around 38% more than the lifetime sales of the Xbox One.
That said, PS5 still trails behind the PS4. The PS4 had allegedly sold more than 81 million consoles by July 2018, just over 4.5 years after launch, and it currently stands at over 117 million. So, the PS5, which is in its fifth year, considerably lags behind the PS4’s sales timeline.
Moreover, since we are now in the latter half of the PS5’s lifecycle, it is unlikely that the console sales will pick up for Sony moving forward, especially as gamers will look towards the PS6. Sony is expected to launch the PS6 sometime in 2027 with full PS4 and PS5 backwards compatibility. There is also reportedly going to be a PS6 handheld which will launch alongside the home console.
