Is a little more OK? The Samsung 300E5A wants to stand out with high mobility at a low price, despite the lack of ULV hardware. Even the odd game isn't a problem for the Office notebook thanks to the switchable Nvidia GPU.

With the power of two cores. An AMD quad core and a second graphics card in a crossfire configuration are to boost the performance of Samsung's multimedia entry-level machine. Why the 305E7A can't completely convince us despite the good input devices and low emissions is revealed here, in our review.

The Samsung Series 3 300E5A is a relatively inexpensive laptop and its price ought to mean a fair few cut corners. In fact, Samsung has made cuts in appropriate places except where the screen is concerned and even that will be fine if your needs don’t include a lot of video viewing.

The Samsung NP300E5A-A01DX packs considerable pace for its price, although we had a few issues with the screen and the keyboard. We’re also not sure the lid would stand up to repeated use. If supplies of this one are low, it’s well worth keeping an eye out for its more powerful brother, the NP300E5A-S01UK, at around £500.

The Samsung Series 3 NP300E5A-A01DX is a nice enough budget notebook but it exists in an incredibly cluttered market. Indeed, just about the only thing that makes it stand out from the competition is its styling and the screen's matt finish, which is certain to find favour for many tired of seeing overhead lighting and typing manoeuvres reflected in a mirror display laptop.

Though the Samsung Series 3 seems attractive on paper for its price, a closer look doesn't bear this out. Disappointing performance scores and battery life, along with a few missing specs, take the edge off what is otherwise a very capable machine. The Series 3 355V5C-S01 isn't bad, but it's not a great machine either.

Samsung may have made a more affordable version of their Series 3 laptop by switching over to the AMD Fusion platform for the NP305E5A but they didn't make enough improvements to keep up with other options available. Without excelling in any particular area, the Samsung NP355V5C does have enough power to handle a relatively wide range of tasks (productivity, games, reasonably demanding programmes). It has good connectivity, satisfactory battery life and more than enough storage space. Too bad about the low contrast. Let's hope AMD makes some quick changes to its graphics driver, which requires a certain amount of expertise.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 520MX:
Entry level graphics card based on the GF119 chip with a 64 Bit memory bus. Compared to the GT 520M, the MX is higher clocked.
AMD Radeon HD 6540G2: Dual Graphics (asymmetrical CrossFire) combination of a dedicated Radeon HD 6450M or 6470M and a 6520G APU graphics card (in the processor core of the A-Series).
AMD Radeon HD 7660G + HD 7670M Dual Graphics: Dual Graphics (asymmetrical CrossFire) combination of a dedicated Radeon HD 7670M and a 7660G processor graphics card (in the processor core of the A-Series). Only in some cases faster than the dedicated GPU alone and furthermore it sometimes suffers from micro stuttering.
AMD Radeon HD 7670M: Renamed Radeon HD 6650M and therefore still produced in 40nm.
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
AMD Radeon HD 6310: Integrated graphics card in the Zacate netbook processors (e.g. E-350 and E-240) featuring an UVD3 video decoder and no dedicated memory.
Intel HD Graphics 2000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The 2000 is the slower, internally GT1 called, version with 6 Execution Units (EUs).
AMD Radeon HD 6320:
Integrated graphics card in the Zacate netbook processors (e.g. E-450) featuring an UVD3 video decoder and no dedicated memory. Thanks to TurboCore, it can automatically overclock to 600 MHz.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).
AMD Radeon HD 6520G:

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i5:
2450M: Dual-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. The CPU is clocked at 2.5 GHz (Turbo Boost 2.8-3.1 GHz) and the GPU at 650 (1300 MHz Turbo).

14.0: 14 inch display size is a mixture between the small formats of subnotebooks and the 15 inch standard display. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
17.3: Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.

1.2 kg:
This subnotebook is one of the most lightweight of all notebooks and can be carried very easily. There exist hardly any models in this extreme class of weight. 7-9 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
2.65 kg:
This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
