Resident Evil 9 has been in development since 2018. On Reddit, players are excited about the prospect of an imminent release, but are also worried that the gameplay could deviate too much from previous games.
As the leaker AestheticGamer aka Dusk, who specializes in Capcom games and is considered a credible source, announced back in March 2024 in a X-Post (formerly Twitter), Resident Evil 9 is said to be an open-world RPG for the first time. This information is based on the assumption that Resident Evil 9 is based on the same RE engine as Dragon's Dogma 2.
The same leaker has now also obtained information on a possible release date. This morning, AestheticGamer aka Dusk tweeted the following:
I have good news/rumors to deliver on Resident Evil 9. The possible delay I had heard murmurs about can be pushed aside. RE9 should be revealed pretty soon & release next year. If what I heard previously holds true, should be in January. It'll have had about 7 years in dev.

It has already been expected that Resident Evil 9 will be released in 2025. However, fans have not yet assumed that it will be released in January. Whether this will actually happen remains to be seen. The leaker is at least very cautious: "If what I've heard so far is correct, it should be in January". The claim that RE 9 will be an open-world game has also not yet been officially confirmed by Capcom.
