Velocity Micro: Velocity Micro reveals Android-based Cruz Reader
Velocity Micro’s e-reader is going to pose a threat to even full-fledged tablets. It will be available for buyers by next month.
Velocity Micro has revealed details about a slew of launches lined up in the Android OS based devices category which will be sold under the ‘Cruz’ series of products. Amongst them, the Cruz Reader is an e-reader that is said to revolutionize the concept of e-readers. The first reports of this device had appeared somewhere back in April and ever since then not much was known about the product.
The Cruz Reader has a 7-inch touch-capacitive display offering a resolution of 800 X 600 pixels with an aspect ratio of 4:3. The device is powered by an 800MHz processor and as far as storage is concerned it will be handled by an SD card as it has a very small internal storage. The Cruz Reader also comes bundled with a 2GB SD card and is a Wi-Fi enabled device which supports seamless web browsing and comes with support for high quality audio playback. The device also features an accelerometer and a USB port and SD card slot are standard too.
It will initially run on Android 2.1 and, with promise for future Flash support, we might eventually see it running on version 2.2. But don’t be fooled by the Cruz Reader’s “e-reader” tag as it doesn’t underperform when it comes to support for apps, games, web browsing or music and acts no less than a full-fledged Android tablet. The device, supposedly, also comes with a battery that will give an average of 10 hours of usage time and 24 hours of stand-by time. The Cruz Reader is also light and sleek, weighing under a pound and measuring 0.5-inches thick.
Reports suggest, Velocity Micro has also partnered with Borders and Kobo to facilitate delivery of e-books to their device and through which users will be able to access more than 2 million e-books using the in-built Borders e-book library portal app. The Cruz Reader will tentatively hit the market by next month and will be priced at $199. Considering the upward trend of the acceptability of Android powered devices and tablet-like performance of this e-reader, we might actually see quite a lot of takers for it when it comes to the market.
