So does that mean no Pinetrail systems will be released this year?

The latest rumor doing rounds is that the Intel N450 processor (codenamed Pinetrail) will be launched on the 3rd of January next year. This is Intel’s next generation platform aimed at reducing energy usage and size. The N450 will have the graphics and the rest of the chipset integrated on the same chip, which will help reducing the size immensely. This means that the already announced systems with this platform will have to be delayed till atleast later than Jan 3rd.

These probably won’t be the dual-core chips as being rumored earlier, but definitely lighter and smaller. Code-named “Pine trail”, these platforms will have a single-core Atom N450 CPU with built-in northbridge functions and should be paired with the new NM10 (Tiger Point) chipset. The advantage of using the new architecture is that the Pine Trail can run faster thereby increasing processor performance and graphics performance. Moreover, the power requirements are further reduced to about 7W TDP meaning that the battery life would be increased. Intel also says that fanless systems could be built on the Pine Trail platform but at relative configuration tradeoffs.
