New Xiaomi Sports Walkie Talkie with 5,000 km range appears

The Xiaomi Sports Walkie Talkie has been revealed in China. The gadget has been designed for a wide range of activities, including cycling, hiking and skiing. It supports the 4G networks for three major operators in the country for up to 5,000 km (3,107 miles) range.

The Sports Walkie Talkie can be used for one-to-one or one-to-many communications, as well as one-to-one voice calls. According to Xiaomi, built-in noise reduction technology works when skiing at speeds up to 60 kph (~37 mph) or cycling at up to 40 kph (~25 mph). In the accompanying app, you can set up groups, view the shared location of your friends, or trigger an alarm noise to help you find the gadget if you're lost. Next to the multi-functional knob is a glove-friendly button for one-click group formation.

Other features include an integrated display showing the walkie-talkie’s status and remaining battery level, and, thanks to Bluetooth, you can listen to music and talk simultaneously. The 1,030 mAh battery is said to allow up to 24 hours of continuous use, or the device can last for up to 36 hours on standby. Plus, the gadget comes with a range of magnetic straps and clips so it can be attached to a helmet or jacket or worn on a lanyard around your neck.

The device is compact, measuring 55 mm (~2.2 inches) wide, and is said to operate in temperatures as low as -30°C (~-22°F). The Xiaomi Sports Walkie Talkie will launch in China on January 6th with a CNY 399 (~$55) RRP. It is unclear whether or when it could launch in other markets like the US, where Xiaomi sells products like the Portable Electric Air Compressor (currently $44.99 at Amazon).
