On May 21, Electronic Arts revealed initial details about the class system in the upcoming AAA shooter Battlefield 6 on X. The developers aim to blend traditional class-based teamwork with modern loadout flexibility. However, early community feedback has been largely critical.

Before the introduction of “specialists,” the Battlefield series followed a classic role-based system built around four core classes: Assault, Engineer, Medic and Recon. Each class had a clearly defined role and was limited to specific weapon types. For example, Assault soldiers carried medkits to heal teammates and used versatile assault rifles for front-line combat. Recon players, by contrast, focused on spotting enemies from a distance and taking them out with sniper rifles.

The class system in Battlefield 6

Scrapping the traditional class system was one of the most controversial decisions when Battlefield 2042 launched. Since then, many players have called for a return to the classic class structure, hoping it would bring back clearer roles and stronger team dynamics in Battlefield 6. On May 21, EA revealed the first details about the updated classes on X – here’s a quick overview:

With the class system planned for Battlefield 6, the developers aim to merge the series’ traditional role-based design with the loadout flexibility seen in modern shooters. Each class will have access to the full range of weapons, but class-specific bonuses and unique “signature” elements will play a key role:

  • Signature Weapon: Some weapons provide additional benefits when used by their designated class.
  • Signature Trait: Passive abilities tied to each class – for example, scouts automatically mark enemies when aiming.
  • Signature Gadget: Every class comes with a unique gadget that reinforces its role on the battlefield.

The system is further expanded with two customizable gadget slots per class, class-specific throwable items and traits that unlock over time to grant additional perks. To help new players ease into the game, each class will also come with preset loadouts.

Community voices criticism

Many players responded critically in the comments on X. A common concern is that allowing full weapon access across all classes could undermine the game’s identity and weaken team play. Fans argue that class-specific restrictions are key to maintaining distinct roles on the battlefield. The system has drawn comparisons to the unpopular loadout design of Battlefield 2042, with many calling for a return to the stricter weapon limits seen in Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4. As one frustrated player put it: “After two disappointments, I’m out if it stays like this.”

The new class system will undergo extensive testing over the coming weeks in the Battlefield Labs test environment. A server performance test is also scheduled from May 23 to 26. Invitations will be sent via email through the EA Playtesting program and interested players can sign up here to take part. Whether EA and DICE can regain the community’s trust with Battlefield 6 remains to be seen. The official reveal event is planned for this summer, and according to EA’s latest financial report, the game is set to launch by March 2026 at the latest.
