The Pixel 10 may not be the only place to get a built-in smart assistant powered by Google Gemini.
Rumors are flying that Apple recently approached Google about integrating Gemini into Siri and Apple Intelligence. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, both Apple and Google may partner to bring a customized version of Google's Gemini AI model to the iPhone to bolster Siri and Apple Intelligence.
Apple Intelligence, which was announced in June 2024, has largely fallen flat. Plagued by delays and lackluster features, Apple Intelligence has been more of a burden than a blessing for the Cupertino colossus. Considering how far behind Apple was in the AI game when Apple Intelligence was announced, it's no wonder that Apple has been scrambling the past year to get its AI models up to scratch.
However, this appears to have proven quite difficult for Apple. The company allegedly reached out to both OpenAI and Anthropic to use their AI models (ChatGPT and Claude, respectively) as the new backbone of a revamped Apple Intelligence, Siri, or both. Citing "people familiar with the matter," Gurman speculates that Apple is now talking to Google.
While these discussions have not yet been confirmed, the market apparently sees them as valid; both Apple's and Google's stocks rose Friday on the news, jumping 1.4% and 2.9%, respectively. What is apparent is that Apple badly needs an AI win in a world where the tool is becoming less of a flagship feature and more of an expectation in mobile devices.
