The Made by Google event aired yesterday, August 20, and it showcased the new Pixel lineup including the Pixel 10 series phones, Pixel Watch 4, Pixel Buds 2a, and more. What it also showcased, either intentionally or unintentionally, was an unannounced smart speaker seemingly powered by Gemini.
During the Gemini Live segment starring Lando Norris and Giannis Antetokounmpo, Norris was vocally interacting with a round-ish smart speaker sitting next to him (around the 15:55 mark). He asked a question about racing reflexes translating to basketball to which he received an AI powered response through the smart speaker. The device was a white Echo Dot looking ball but squished at the poles, with an LED ring at the bottom, in Google’s Nest-style fabric design.
While the video didn’t mention any other details about the speaker itself, a report by Android Headlines claims to have more information. The publication states that after looking at additional images of the device, it will come in four color options: black, porcelain, bright red, and light green. The black, white, and light green variants are expected to be called Obsidian, Porcelain, and Jade, respectively, in line with other Google hardware.
Since the segment was about Gemini Live, it’s safe to say that the unannounced smart speaker will come with Gemini Live. It is said to feature new natural voices and be able to sense when the user is away. The speaker could also detect sounds like glass breaking or the smoke alarm going off and send alerts to the user’s phone. The report adds that this speaker will allow pairing with a Google TV Streamer to enable cinematic sound around the house. Being a smart hub, it will allow users to control devices in the Matter ecosystem as well.
It should be noted that other than showing the device in the white color with AI powered responses, Google has not shared any more information so take this with a grain of salt.
