Parenting may be changing thanks to AI tools like Google Gemini.
Google's consumer-level AI, Gemini, can now create fully illustrated storybooks for children based on simple prompts. The books can also be read aloud by an AI-generated voice with automatic page turning. The books are 10 pages each, making for quick and easily readable storybooks.
Google announced that users can even upload personal photos, drawings, or files to better customize the storybooks. Gemini can also generate books in over 45 languages and use different art styles (e.g., pixel art).
While the generator is generally fairly good at creating storybooks, users should keep in mind that this is still AI-generated content. As such, the books can contain errors and inconsistencies typical to such content, including different character art between pages, typos or oddly structured sentences, and bizarre topics or stories.
The quality of the storybooks will also heavily depend on the prompt entered. For instance, a prompt requesting a storybook starring trains covering the dangers of cigarette smoking generated a book where an anthropomorphic train was encouraged to "only puff out his wonderful, clean steam" instead of black smoke that he thought would make him look older and run faster. As such, users should view this feature as a novelty at best and exercise extreme caution prior to sharing these stories with children.
The generator is available on both desktop and mobile through the Gemini app.
