Introduced in late August, Nano Banana, which is officially known as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, is now the most popular AI-powered image generator and editing tool. Thanks to it, the Gemini app has finally snatched the top spot in the App Store AI apps category from ChatGPT.

Last month, the arrival of Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, also known as Nano Banana, managed to change the AI-driven generation and editing of images by taking a noticeable step forward in terms of quality and control compared to Google's previous similar products and all existing competitors. Thanks to the consistency provided by this update, a person or product in an image remains the same while creating new images with different backgrounds, outfits, hairstyles, and so on. When talking about popularity, these capabilities have managed to push the mobile Gemini app 45% up month-over-month in terms of downloads.

According to data from Appfigures, Gemini is heading to the 13 million downloads mark in the App Store, compared to less than 9 million for the whole month of August. Additionally, it grabbed the top spot in the AI apps category of Apple's digital store. The best result before Nano Banana's arrival was a 3rd place on the US App Store on January 28th, 2025. The Gemini app achieved second place in the previously mentioned rankings on September 8 and reached first place on September 12. When looking at the global rankings of iOS apps, Gemini is among the top five in 108 countries.

On the other hand, while Gemini is a Google product and Android is its native mobile platform, ChatGPT is still holding the top spot in the AI apps category on Google Play. On September 8, Google Gemini and Google Labs VP Josh Woodward revealed that the app had managed to acquire no less than 23 million first-time users since the introduction of Nano Banana. Their experience with the app had generated well over 500 million images, said the Google official.

For the entire year of 2025, the Gemini app has managed to amass almost 104 million downloads. Since its introduction in February 2024, it has exceeded 185 million downloads across both Android and iOS.
