OpenAI is moving into hardware, partnering with Jony Ive and selecting Luxshare to manufacture its first consumer device. Suppliers describe the product as a screen-free, smart-speaker-style device. OpenAI is also developing glasses, a wearable pin, and a digital voice recorder, with a target launch in late 2026 or early 2027.
Tang Tan, Apple’s former design executive, leads as Chief Hardware Officer at OpenAI, reporting to Sam Altman. In May, OpenAI acquired io Products, the hardware studio Tan co-founded with Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion, backed by SoftBank. Court filings in a trademark dispute describe the plan as building a family of “AI-native” products under the io brand.
OpenAI has hired around two dozen former Apple employees across design, hardware, UI, audio, wearables, and manufacturing to accelerate its hardware roadmap. Notable hires include manufacturing design expert Matt Theobald and Siri interface designer Cyrus Daniel Irani, both now on Tan’s team.
OpenAI is also leveraging Apple’s supply chain as it recruits new talent. In addition to working with Luxshare, the company has reached out to Goertek, which supplies components for AirPods, HomePod, and Apple Watch, to provide speaker modules. OpenAI is connecting with other Chinese partners that Apple has used for tooling and audio as well. These moves indicate that OpenAI aims to grow like a consumer electronics company, rather than just a research lab.
Reports indicate that OpenAI is exploring additional device ideas, with schedules that align with the smart-speaker-style product. The company aims to integrate AI-focused features with the design quality that Jony Ive’s teams are renowned for. To attract experienced talent, OpenAI is offering competitive pay, new opportunities, and other incentives.
A potential conflict exists as Apple has integrated OpenAI’s models into Siri and iOS since 2024, while OpenAI is developing hardware with former Apple executives and suppliers. This overlap could create tension if OpenAI’s device plans compete with Apple’s interests, potentially affecting their ongoing collaboration as new products are developed.
