Apple expected to launch MacBook Pros with OLED screens by 2026, followed by MacBook Air
In a recent report by MacRumors, insights from analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Technology Research reveal Apple's strategic shift to OLED technology for its upcoming iPad Pros' displays, paving the way for a similar transition in MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models over the next three years.
Pu anticipates Apple to update the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with OLED screens by 2026, a year following the projected OLED update for iPad Pros in 2025, as previously claimed by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
While Apple's current Mini-LED displays in MacBook Pros are by no means unimpressive, OLED displays bring a host of advancements, including per-pixel dimming, delivering superior blacks, markedly improved response times — addressing complaints related to Apple's Mini-LED display's response times — and more vibrant, richer colors along with a boost in overall brightness and efficiency.
Nevertheless, the fear of panel burn-in still looms over OLEDs. Despite ongoing improvements in modern OLED technology to mitigate this issue, Apple's approach to managing it remains uncertain. This fear of burn-in is particularly pertinent given the static elements inherent in macOS, such as the menu bar and the dock, along with several other non-moving controls in desktop apps. The coming years will likely shed light on how Apple addresses this challenge and ensures optimal performance and longevity of its devices.
