Affordable foldable smartphones from Samsung and Huawei reportedly coming next year
Rumours about Samsung developing a mid-range foldable smartphone aren't new and have been around since 2022. Samsung was the first major OEM to bring foldables to the market, so it makes sense that it will spearhead efforts to make them more affordable. Now, a TrendForce report says that they could be a reality next year.
The report sits in line with an earlier leak which said that Samsung was working on a Galaxy A-branded foldable that would launch sometime in 2024-25. A 2024 reveal, however, runs the risk of taking attention away from Samsung XR glasses slated to debut alongside the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. Huawei also plans to join Samsung in the race to launch a "competitively priced" foldable smartphone.
Strictly speaking, Transsion Group-backed Tecno already launched what can be called an "affordable" foldable, aka the Tecno Phantom V Fold. It costs ₹78,499 (US$950), making it the only sub-US$1000 foldable smartphone. It is unclear as to how much Samsung's Galaxy A-branded foldable will cost, but an earlier estimate pegged it at US$800.
