realme GT Neo 3T smartphone review: Colorful phone with bright AMOLED

Kamehameha. The realme GT Neo 3T draws attention with its flashy colors and a "Dragon Ball Z" special edition case. Is this all just hype, or does the mid-range smartphone also prove itself in our review?
realme GT Neo 3T

The realme GT Neo 3T is the slightly cheaper variant of the GT Neo 3 that we reviewed a short while ago. It is also more daring in terms of color options: Potential buyers can choose between an eye-catching yellow or the "Dragon Ball Z" edition in blue and orange that we have as our review sample.

At a price between US$ 430 - 470 (depending on the configuration), the phone falls into the mid-range and faces strong competitors such as the OnePlus Nord 2T or the Samsung Galaxy A53. Find out if Realme's colorful smartphone proves itself in the following review.

Case: Bold choice of colors available

As previously mentioned, it doesn't get boring when it comes to color selection: Our review sample is the "Dragon Ball Z" edition, which only differs from the standard version of the GT Neo 3T in visual details: An orange back with a logo and blue sides gives the smartphone a unique look. The phone also has a special design for the user interface in anime style and a special charging animation.

The normal realme GT Neo 3T already stands out in terms of color choice: the yellow variant with fluorescent particles has a racing flag design on the back. The white variant also uses the racing flag design. Only the black variant is more reserved with a uniform matte design on the back.

The GT Neo 3T differs only minimally from the GT Neo 3 in terms of dimensions, but is considerably heavier. The smartphone can be twisted minimally and creaks quietly under torsion, but overall case stability is good.

IP certification is lacking, so you can't be sure if the phone will survive a fall into water.

Equipment: 3 versions of the realme GT Neo 3T

In total, realme offers its smartphone in 3 price ranges:

  • realme GT Neo 3T 8 GB RAM / 128 GB storage: US$ 430 (estimated)
  • realme GT Neo 3T 8 GB RAM / 256 GB storage: US$ 470 (estimated)
  • realme GT Neo 3T Dragon Ball Z Edition 8 GB RAM / 256 GB storage: US$ 500 (estimated)

There is no microSD reader for memory expansion, but dual-SIM is possible. NFC is also on board, so nothing stands in the way of using the smartphone as a mobile means of payment. Bluetooth 5.2 is a fairly up-to-date version of the wireless interface for audio and data transmission.

Software: Standard update timeframe

The realme UI 3 is based on Android 12. The manufacturer promises 2 Android updates and 3 years of security patches, but other manufacturers such as Samsung are now going well beyond that. At the time of review, the last security update was from May 2022 and thus already a few months old. Buyers therefore cannot expect monthly patches.

The realme UI is quick and easy to use for Android connoisseurs, even if some details are designed a little differently than on stock Android. However, the manufacturer generally uses Google's applications for most apps, so adjustment shouldn't prove problematic.

Communication & GNSS: Good WLAN speed

The real-world GT Neo 3T supports a lot of 4G frequencies, so you can use it for mobile internet access in many countries around the world. 5G is also on board with a fairly wide frequency spectrum. During testing, we randomly checked the smartphone's reception quality and we were very satisfied: even flagship phones don't perform better in many situations, and the reception is usually good, even indoors.

WiFi 6 is available as the fastest WLAN standard. The realme phone thus enables fast data transfer, as confirmed under testing with our Asus ROG AXE11000 reference router: The smartphone beats all comparison devices in the send direction. In the receive direction, however, it ranks in the middle in terms of speed.

After a short delay, the realme phone is pinpointed outdoors at an accuracy of up to 3 meters. Numerous satellite networks are used to determine the location of the smartphone, including GPS, Galileo, Glonass or Beidou, but not the SBAS support system, which increases accuracy.

In our practical test, a bike ride on which we also took the Garmin Venu 2 smartwatch for comparison, the realme GT Neo 3T proves to be a good navigation device. Occasionally the location was slightly off-route, placing us in front yards or making it appear as if though we were riding through houses. The Garmin Venu 2 is a little more accurate here, especially in the narrow streets of the old town. But those who do not need absolute precision will find the localization capabilities of the realme smartphone sufficient enough for navigational tasks.

Telephony & Voice Quality: Clear communication

realme uses Google's phone app by default, which is familiar from other Android phones and should make switching smartphones easier.

Communication with the other party via the earpiece works clearly and smoothly. Callers can also understand each other very clearly via the speaker and hands-free microphone, except when we speak too quietly, which then causes problems for the microphone of the realme GT Neo 3T.

Cameras: Hybrid zoom is missing

Photo with the front camera
Photo with the front camera

The camera system consists of 3 cameras, including a wide-angle camera and a macro lens. It is thus quite similar to the camera setup of the realme GT Neo 3. The only difference is the sensor of the main camera: while the GT Neo 3 uses the Sony IMX766, the cheaper model uses the OV64B from OmniVision.

This allows you to take decent photos, but the GT Neo 3T uses very strong colors that sometimes look very bright. Also, the white flowers of the fuchsia in the first picture overshine, so that some details are lost.

More details can also be seen in the photo of the surroundings with the high-end cameras, and the sky also looks much less grainy here than in the pictures from the realme phone. We quite like the sharpness in low light, but the dark areas are not brightened as well here.

The wide-angle camera takes decent snapshots. However, there are much better photos from other smartphones, such as the Honor Magic4 Pro, which gives much sharper detail of the roof of the large building on the opposite side of the river than the camera in the realme phone, which only produces pixel mush.

As with the GT Neo 3, we are also bothered by the fact that a hybrid zoom between the ultra-wide-angle and main camera is not possible, but only a direct switching. Other camera systems offer more flexibility here.

Videos can be recorded in 4K at a maximum of 60 fps with the main camera. Autofocus and brightness adjustment worked quite well in our tests. Recordings are also possible with the wide-angle camera, but you have to decide on a lens in advance, since this cannot be changed during recording.

The front camera has a resolution of 16 megapixels. Selfies are successful in good lighting conditions and can also be enlarged somewhat without losing too much detail.

The main camera does a solid job in the photo lab. Slight blurring in texts is only visible upon closer examination. Pictures become quite noisy at 1 lux illumination. We really like the color reproduction under perfect lighting conditions, but it is a little too bright.

Accessories & Warranty: 80-watt power supply included

Inclusion of the charging device upon purchase is no longer standard among all manufacturers. The GT Neo 3T, on the other hand, includes a quick charger and everything else you need, including a protective case out of silicone. However, we would have liked a little more creativity in the "Dragon Ball Z" edition: The protective case is a simple anthracite color. But the SIM tool has an appropriate design.

The warranty is 24 months when purchased in the EU. This may differ in other countries and regions.

Input Devices & Operation: Fingerprint sensor placed deep

Operating the 120 Hz touchscreen is a pleasure. realme specifies a 1,000 Hz sampling rate, meaning that the touchscreen is scanned 1,000 times per second for touches. The display can adjust its frame rate to the respective content in 4 steps, which worked reliably and without noticeable jerks in our tests.

Below the screen is the fingerprint sensor, which can also measure the heart rate (as a nice gimmick). But this feature is primarily used to unlock the smartphone or individual apps, which it does so with good accuracy after the finger is registered and with a barely noticeable delay. However, the sensor is placed a bit too low for our taste.

Face recognition can also be used for the biometric security check. However, this is a software solution that works reliably but is not quite as secure as hardware-based 3D recognition of the face.

Like its more expensive sibling, the realme GT Neo 3T features a bright AMOLED screen with expanded Full HD resolution. Most other phones in this price range also offer such a screen, but the Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G NE offers even more brightness with a fully exposed brightness sensor.

We achieved up to 1010 cd/m² of brightness in APL-18 mode, so the smartphone is suitable for playing HDR content, as stated by the manufacturer.

Since the OLED display can completely switch off individual pixels, a complete black is theoretically possible and with it, an infinite contrast ratio.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM detected 471.8 Hz

The display backlight flickers at 471.8 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) .

The frequency of 471.8 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17903 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

In our measurements with the CalMAN software and the spectrophotometer, the phone proves to be very color-accurate, so you could also evaluate printing ink colors on the screen with the appropriate settings. The response times are very short and thus optimal for demanding users.

We noticed the usual PWM flickering in OLED screens at low brightness levels, which can be cushioned by a DC dimming mode, but this is hidden in the developer settings. At 50% brightness and above there are hardly any differences between the two modes.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White

The smartphone can be used outdoors on bright days without issue, but a shady spot is preferable due to strong reflections on the display.

Viewing angles are impeccable thanks to the OLED panel, even when looking at the display from a very flat viewing angle.

Performance: A lot of power for the mid-range

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 is a high-end SoC that offers slightly less performance than the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 that realme installed in the GT Neo 3. Nevertheless, differences should rarely be noticeable in practice, especially when using less demanding applications.

Overall, navigating through the menus and apps on the realme GT Neo 3T is smooth and problem-free. The smartphone only reaches its limits in very performance-intensive apps. Compared to other phones in this price range, the GT Neo 3T offers more power. Only the Motorola Moto G200 once again proves to be a powerhouse that is hard to beat.

The UFS 3.1 storage also ensures quick loading times. It does not work quite as fast when writing as in the realme GT Neo 3 or in the OnePlus Nord 2T, but it is still very conducive to the system speed.

Gaming: 60 fps mostly possible

Regarding gaming, you can hope for 60 fps in the vast majority of games. Even high settings in PUBG Mobile are no exception. Frame rates were measured with the GameBench tool.

However, more frame rates are only rarely possible. While games that support 90 or 120 Hz do exist, they also have to be explicitly supported by the smartphone manufacturer in order for faster frame rates to be possible. GT mode, which is supposed to increase the performance even more and is available in the manufacturer's gaming overlay, doesn't help either.

Control via the precise touchscreen and the position sensor works without issue.

Temperature

The realme GT Neo 3T can sometimes get noticeably warm. Up to 44.5 °C is possible on the front of the smartphone, especially when lots of performance is required over longer periods of time. This may be problematic in hot ambient temperatures.

Nevertheless, this does not seem to have any effect on performance: The 3DMark Stress Test shows consistent performance, even during 20 runs of Wild Life Extreme.

Speakers

The realme GT Neo 3T uses the earpiece as a second speaker and so attempts to make stereo effects possible. This works to some extent, but the hybrid is significantly quieter than the main speaker, so it cannot completely replace a full-fledged second speaker.

The sound is good, does not boom at high volumes and allows you to enjoy the occasional pop song. Even classical music sounds quite decent. But film sound lacks bass, so external speakers or headphones are better here. These can be connected via Bluetooth or USB-C.

All current aptX codecs are available for wireless communication, as are LHDC and LDAC. The phone is certified for Hi-Res Audio and also supports a 3D audio format thanks to Dolby Atmos.

Battery life: Good stamina and fast recharging

Power Consumption

Power consumption is on the usual level and only increased in the absolute maximum power range.

It takes about 40 minutes to fully charge the battery with the included 80-watt power adapter. If you are short on time, 10 minutes of charging will give you enough power for a few hours of use, which fits well with the phone's racing design.

Battery Life

Thanks to a 5,000 mAh battery, the realme managed a runtime of about 16 hours in our WLAN test. This is very good for the class, and the smartphone also scores well in all other battery tests.

Those looking for an smartphone with stamina that lasts up to 2 days on a single charge under normal use should consider the realme GT Neo 3T.

The realme GT Neo 3T has some differences compared to its bigger sibling, the realme GT Neo 3. First and foremost, the somewhat older and slower SoC, which still offers a lot of performance. The camera systems are also very similar in terms of image quality despite a different main sensor, so there is hardly any real argument in favor of the more expensive model.

Sure, the case comes only in plastic instead of the glass chassis of the GT Neo 3, and the super-fast 150-watt charging is not available in the GT Neo 3T either, but the battery recharges very quickly, even with 80 watts.

For a savings of at least US$ 130, the GT Neo 3T is a decent alternative, especially since it gives other devices in its price range a run for their money. With fast WLAN, 60 Hz gaming, good performance rates without throttling, great-sounding hybrid stereo speakers and a DC dimming mode (albeit somewhat hidden) for the OLED display, the realme GT Neo 3T offers a good overall package. We did encounter a few drawbacks in the review process: Hybrid zoom between the wide-angle and main camera is missing, IP certification is absent and the update timeframe is relatively short. The creaking sounds emitted under torsion slightly reduces our quality impression of the case.

The realme GT Neo 3T is boldly designed and has everything a mid-range smartphone needs. However, there are better models in terms of camera image quality.

Lots of other alternatives exist in this price range: Those wanting to connect their smartphone to the PC to facilitate workflow should take a look at the Motorola Moto G200. The Google Pixel 6, the price of which has dropped considerably lately, offers a much better camera.

Price and Availability

Similarly to the realme GT Neo 3, availability of the GT Neo 3T around the globe appears to be sporadic. Readers are therefore advised to regularly check via Google or Amazon for availability.

Amazon UK offers the smartphone for £369.00 (pricing as of 11.07.2022).
