During the official unveiling of the Mi MIX 2S today, Xiaomi also presented several other products, including a wireless recharger, a mini speaker and the company’s first take at a gaming laptop. With the announcement of the new Mi Gaming Laptop, Xiaomi intends to break into the gaming sector, offering affordable models with powerful configurations.
The design of the Mi Gaming Laptop might not be appealing to many gamers, as it is mostly the same as the one from last year’s Mi Notebook Pro. However, Xiaomi’s true intention was to make a gaming laptop that can blend in seamlessly at a workplace environment, and Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun explained this aspect by saying that the design is “mild on the outside, wild on the inside.” Apart from the rather dull but light aluminum chassis that clearly does not give away the true purpose of this model, Xiaomi included a few more discrete bells and whistles in the form of an RGB backlit keyboard plus four RGB illuminated zones around the case.
In order to keep an affordable price for this model, Xiaomi decided to integrate Intel’s Kaby Lake Core i7-7700HQ CPU, which is standard on most gaming laptops nowadays, so this can hardly be considered “wild”. The components that really make this a gaming laptop are the 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and the 6GB VRAM version of the Nvidia GTX 1060 GPU, plus a 256 GB NVMe SSD coupled with a 1 TB HDD. Alternatively, Xiaomi also plans to release a model with 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SATA SSD + 1 TB HDD storage combo and a GTX 1050 Ti GPU.
Other notable features coming with the Mi Gaming Laptop include:
• 15.6-inch 1080p panel with thin bezels and 72% NTSC color gamut
• Dolby Atmos dual speaker setup
• 4 programmable keys and n-key rollover
• dual fan and 3+2 heatpipe design for improved cooling
• 4 X USB Type-A 3.0 ports, 2 X USB Type-C ports, audio jack with pre-amp, HDMI output
• 0.82-inch thickness
The GTX 1060 model has an MSRP of ~US$1,440, while the GTX 1050 Ti model will cost ~US$960, and both variants will begin shipping on April 13.
I first stepped into the wondrous IT&C world when I was around seven years old. I was instantly fascinated by computerized graphics, whether they were from games or 3D applications like 3D Max. I'm also an avid reader of science fiction, an astrophysics aficionado, and a crypto geek. I started writing PC-related articles for Softpedia and a few blogs back in 2006. I joined the Notebookcheck team in the summer of 2017 and am currently a senior tech writer mostly covering processor, GPU, and laptop news.
