Xiaomi SkyNomad: Full-size hybrid SUV with 1,060 miles of range launches
After months of speculation surrounding the enormous SkyNomad EREV SUV, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun revealed the details on July 30. The Technology Launch Event centered on the new SkyNomad sub-brand, known as Pengcheng in China, and its two massive SUVs, the N70 Max and N90 Max. Lei Jun also used the event to explain the company's strategic shift toward range-extender technology. While the electric SU7 and YU7 were designed as aerodynamic, driver-focused vehicles, the boxy shape of a full-size family SUV requires enormous amounts of energy. According to Xiaomi's CEO, a purely electric powertrain would require an impractically large and heavy battery. Xiaomi's answer to this physical limitation is its proprietary Kunlun architecture, which was detailed at the event and developed specifically for EREVs.
Both EREV SUVs feature a dual-motor AWD system producing up to 416 hp, allowing them to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph (about 62 mph) in 5.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 118 mph. The SkyNomad SUVs pair this system with a new 1.5-liter combustion engine that achieves 42 percent thermal efficiency and operates solely as a generator. The five-seat SkyNomad N70 Max, equipped with an 11.9-gallon fuel tank and either a 52kWh LFP or 76kWh NMC battery, offers a CLTC electric range of 314 miles and a total range of 908 miles. The seven-seat flagship SkyNomad N90 Max combines a 15.9-gallon tank with a 76kWh NMC battery, delivering 288 miles of electric range and up to 1,060 miles in total. With the battery depleted, the large SUVs return approximately 37.6 to 38.6 MPG on regular 87-octane gasoline.
Beyond the powertrain, Xiaomi demonstrated the spacious interior enabled by the Kunlun platform. The 17.3-foot-long N90 Max has a 2+2+3 seating layout and a completely flat floor. Its 6.2-foot seat rails allow the cabin to be configured as needed. At the push of a button, the interior can become a lounge with face-to-face seating or a full-size bed. A built-in 2.4-gallon refrigerator, a 21.4-inch rear display, a 25-speaker sound system and a table reinforce the living-room feel. The N70 Max is 195 inches long, seats five and offers up to 64.7 cubic feet of cargo space. Nvidia Thor and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chips provide the computing power for the infotainment and driver-assistance systems, which include rear-facing LiDAR for safer parking. A V2L function can also supply up to 6.6kW of power to external devices.
Xiaomi has further emphasized safety. The so-called "Armor Cage" body uses ultra-high-strength 2,200MPa steel in 16 key areas, while the flagship N90 Max is equipped with 12 airbags. According to Xiaomi, the Long-Jia battery exceeds current safety standards and is protected by an 18-layer structure. The SUVs can also remain afloat for up to three minutes in an emergency at a wading depth of 29.5 inches. A dedicated tire safety system is designed to keep the vehicle stable at 99 mph even if tires on both sides suffer blowouts.
The biggest surprise of the event was the pricing. Pre-orders are now open in China with a refundable deposit of about $140. The SkyNomad N70 Max starts at a highly competitive equivalent to around $36,200. The fully equipped flagship N90 Max costs approximately $41,800. The official Chinese launch and first deliveries are scheduled for September 2026. SkyNomad is expected to hit the European market in the second half of 2027.
