Leapmotor takes on VW ID.3: Cheap electric car with LiDAR and 317 miles of range
Pressure on European EV manufacturers continues to grow. Leapmotor, Stellantis' Chinese partner, has released the first images of the interior of its new A05 compact EV. The model combines modern equipment, LiDAR technology for advanced driver assistance, and a range of up to 317 miles.
At around 165 inches or 4.20 meters long, the all-electric five-door sits between a subcompact BEV and a compact EV. This could position the Leapmotor A05 as a future European rival to popular EVs such as the VW ID.3 and more affordable models such as the VW ID. Polo.
While German automakers are still working to establish affordable EVs below the €25,000 mark, Chinese manufacturers are increasingly offering low prices and extensive standard equipment. Leapmotor is among the EV brands that have become particularly relevant to the European market through a partnership with Stellantis.
The Leapmotor A05's interior features a modern design with two-tone surfaces and prominent accents. Initial images show pink elements paired with light-colored surfaces and synthetic suede. A large central touchscreen dominates the cockpit, accompanied by a small digital instrument display behind the two-spoke steering wheel.
A full-width air vent strip with ambient lighting and an uncluttered center console with wireless smartphone charging are intended to create a more upscale feel. Leapmotor is following the current trend among many Chinese EV manufacturers of including extensive technology and comfort features even in affordable models.
The LiDAR sensor mounted on the A05's roof is particularly notable. The technology has so far been used mainly in more expensive vehicles and provides additional environmental data for advanced driver-assistance systems. Leapmotor lists features including enhanced highway assistance, navigation-assisted driving in urban traffic, and automatic parking with memorized parking maneuvers.
The compact EV is available with two electric motors producing 70 or 90 kW of power. Energy is stored in lithium iron phosphate batteries with capacities of 39.8 kWh or 53 kWh, which provide the advertised range of 252 and 317 miles, respectively.
Price could be the A05's biggest advantage. Its sibling model, the Leapmotor A10, is already available in China at prices that are substantially lower than those of European EVs when converted. However, a direct comparison with potential European pricing is not yet possible.
Stellantis' investment in Leapmotor gives the automaker access to an established international sales network. The group is supporting Leapmotor's expansion beyond China, making an eventual European launch of the A05 considerably more likely than for vehicles from many other Chinese manufacturers.
