Xiaomi promised us that it would be fitting a special camera sensor to its next flagship smartphone the Mi MIX 4 and it hasn’t disappointed. The Chinese maker has revealed it will be the first maker to fit Samsung’s all-new 108MP ISOCELL camera sensor and that it will be an exclusive in the short term. When it launches, it will, at least on paper, offer the highest resolution of any smartphone on the planet; however, it will use the pixel binning technique harnessing the additional pixels to capture more light, but in manageable file sizes more akin to a 27MP sensor. Assuming it gets its imaging software right, it could set a new benchmark in mobile photography.
Given the news, the Mi MIX 4 is shaping up to be quite the powerhouse flagship smartphone. Not only will it offer a massive camera sensor, it will also pack Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855+ chipset and 45W fast charging putting. This will put it well ahead of the competition from devices like the soon to be unveiled Samsung Galaxy Note 10 range. One aspect not completely certain is whether it will be called the MIX 4 of pick up the number 5 in its nomenclature as Chinese consider the number 4 unlucky.
Also unknown at this stage is what method Xiaomi will adopt with its next generation all-display design. The Mi MIX 3 featured a magnetic slider function for its selfie-camera so it could opt for that approach again or go with a pop-up variant. An outside possibility is that it could instead pick up an under-display selfie camera which wouldn’t altogether surprise given the other high-end specifications on offer. The MIX range was among the first to set the trend towards bezel-less designs that have become so popular in 2019.
