Released in 2020 for Windows PCs and one year later for the company's consoles, Microsoft's latest iteration in its nearly four-decade-old popular flight simulation series has recently received a massive content update, namely World Update XI: Canada. As its name suggests, this refresh brings the world's second-largest country to the game in the highest resolution and fidelity yet, but it also includes new missions.
According to Microsoft, the highlights of the update that any Flight Simulator must look for are the five hand-crafted Canadian airports, including British Columbia’s Castlegar / West Kootenay Regional Airport (CYCG), Victoria International Airport, and Vancouver Island, as well as the missions below:
- Three bush trips (Vancouver Island, Newfoundland, and the Canadian Rockies).
- Three landing challenges (Castlegar, Barkerville, and Calgary).
- Three discovery flights (Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto).
The update comes as the result of an impressive effort made by the Microsoft Flight Simulator team by processing large quantities of the latest geospatial data, including satellite imagery, digital elevation models, and aerial photography. The total of points of interest carefully hand-crafted that have been added to the game by the update is 87, while the number of urban regions is obviously smaller: just 12.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is now available on multiple platforms, such as Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Windows, and Steam, as well as on Xbox One and mobile devices and low-end PCs via Xbox Cloud Gaming (still in Beta for the time being).
