Windows 12 release date in 2026 possible, with AI features that may force CPU upgrades

Microsoft faced criticism for preventing some older PCs from upgrading to its latest OS. When Windows 10 extended support ends in October 2026, a new OS may already be on the market. PCWorld predicts a Windows 12 release date for later this year. Unfortunately, its dependence on AI could once again require purchasing a new PC or CPU.
The website expanded on rumors and manufacturer leaks, revealing additional information. Hudson Valley Next has emerged as the codename for Windows 12. A more flexible CorePC architecture would allow for highly customizable installations. The modular software promises optimization for a wide range of targets, ranging from desktops to mobile devices.

After Microsoft’s massive investment in Copilot, its next OS looks ready to take full advantage of AI advancements. Instead of powering optional features, machine learning would become a fundamental component. Users can expect it to monitor activity to make recommendations and speed up searches. Xbox fans should also anticipate assistance from an evolved Gaming Copilot.
Why would Windows 12 restrict CPUs?
Windows 11 introduced many AI capabilities in a simplified form. However, newer processors with dedicated Neural Processing Units (NPUs) reduce strain on cloud servers and GPUs. As a result, PCWorld believes that CPUs, including Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen AI chips that support 40 TOPS or more, will become mandatory.
It’s not clear whether Windows 12 will welcome any non-NPU processors. More likely, PCs that don’t meet its system requirements will lose some functionality. After buyers invested in Windows 11 PCs, Microsoft may find it difficult to encourage early adoption. The motivation now is not security-related, but rather mandating previously optional AI-based features.
Consumers may also not welcome rumored subscription-based plans for the OS. Still, the report suggests that additional costs are related to an improved Windows 365 cloud-based service. When the Windows 12 release date arrives, a streamlined Home version could launch as a free upgrade.
