French finesse at its finest or another forgettable Android? While most people may or may not have heard of Wiko, its actually surprising to see that sometimes fringe Android manufacturers are willing to buck the trend in order to compete with their larger competitors. Taking the Wiko WIM as an example let’s see what the WIM has to offer. A simple rundown of its specification shows that the WIM is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 SoC, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage and sports a nice 5.5-inch AMOLED display. It seems that the go to color of most manufacturers when it comes to premium looks is either gold or black. In this case, there is also an additional color for green “deep bleen”, which is to say elegant blue. Users should find 64 GB of storage plenty, although the actually usable capacity is about 51.4 GB. But even then, it should be more than sufficient for average users. Should users find the default storage to be insufficient, they can add an additional microSD card. The WIM comes with a 3200 mAh battery, which supports for Qualcomm’s Quickcharge 3.0 via its microUSB port. However, there is no USB type C here, which is slightly disappointing. One surprising feature of the WIM is that it has support for VHF radio, which is not common in smartphones even back when smartphones were new. In terms of software, the WIM comes with Android 7.1 Nougat which is semi-stock with some slight differences such as simple gestures and helpful apps, no bloatware as far as software is concerned. As this is a smartphone, having a camera is considered a given. The WIM sports a dual camera solution consisting of one RGB and one monochrome sensor on the rear side. This setup is supposed to help with details and sharpness of images and even in dim lighting conditions. The image quality is actually quite impressive under good to medium lighting conditions although the sharpness takes a slight dip when it comes to bad light conditions. The front camera is equally impressive; not because of its megapixel count alone but because of its actual sensor quality. The WIM sports a AMOLED FHD display, which is somewhat in an awkward position, because it suffers from low brightness compared to its competitors. However, it is sharp, vibrant and crisp to the eyes. It’s not often that the audio department of smartphones is considered, but the WIM has decent sounding speakers and even supports simultaneous multi Bluetooth pairings of headsets should the user so desire. While battery capacities were discussed, battery runtimes were not. Safe to say the WIM has a good energy management and was able to last about 8 hours and 12 minutes on WI-Fi, although it loses out to its competitors. For a budget only manufacturer to try its hand in the premium segment, Wiko was somewhat able to design something which isn’t too shabby, there is room for improvements in future iterations. Wiko:

Wiko SAS was founded as a French smartphone manufacturer in 2011. Since 2014, the Chinese technology group Tinno Mobile has owned a majority of Wiko. They produce in China. The company has already reached a considerable market share in the French market in early years and expanded to Europe and Africa later on. Nevertheless, the world market share is low.

Reviews are only available since 2014, that is since the first international expansion. Recently, the number of reviews has increased. The ratings are average (as of 2016).
