WhistlinDiesel's Cybertruck tow receiver destroys frame in brutal durability testing
Much has been said about the Tesla Cybertruck's durability, both in favour of and against the electric pickup truck, but there are very few people around who could put the Cybertruck through as much torture as WhistlinDiesel (watch below). While WhistlinDiesel found that the Cybertruck had some highlights, like the durable stainless steel body that managed to withstand physical abuse, including explosions at close range, there were some rather alarming faults and oversights in the Cybertruck's build quality and design.
Likely the most alarming damage WhistlinDiesel managed to inflict during his review was when the Cybertruck's rear casting broke off as a result of forces imposed on it by the tow hitch. The cast aluminium rear subframe ironically snapped clean off when the YouTuber tried to perform a rescue of the Ford F-150 that had comically become stuck on an obstacle the Cybertruck had rather deftly cleared.
The application of power during the recovery could have been gentler, but, as Detwiler points out, recoveries of that nature are perfectly normal “truck things” that Cybertruck owners taking the EV off-road can be expected to do. Until the frame snapped, WhistlinDiesel had been fairly tame with regard to the testing of his Cybertruck, but things only went downhill from there.
Throughout the course of the video, the YouTuber performs several brutal torture tests on the Cybertruck, including his usual door slam test, which caused the plastic door liners to completely detach from their steel frames. Other tests included pressure washing the charge port, which expectedly caused issues charging the Cybertruck. He also took the Cybertruck airborne in a very inappropriate manner, prompting the truck to present him with a Christmas tree of warning lights on the dash.
Going even further into absurdity, Detwiler placed a small amount of C-4 on both the door and tailgate of the Cybertruck and the F-150 to compare the damage. The Cybertruck impressively deflected that assault with some deformation of the steel body panels, while the Ford F-150 suffered massive damage, with holes through the affected components.
As one might expect, by the end of the review, Detwiler's Cybertruck was no longer in working order, and it has been taken to Tesla to be repaired in preparation for part two of his review. It's currently unclear whether Tesla will actually be able to repair the Cybertruck, since it has suffered massive damage, and Cybertruck repairs have not historically been easy to come by.
