Over the next few weeks [meaning in early April], WhatsApp users will be able to add songs, or music clips, rather, to their status updates. The chat platform made the announcement on its blog, stating that WhatsApp Status is a way to share moments with family and friends, and now users can have the perfect soundtrack to go along with them. Those who regularly update their WhatsApp Status will find this feature to be a fun addition.
Similar to Instagram Stories, WhatsApp Status is a short-lived expression meant for family and friends/contacts that disappears in 24 hours. Till now, WhatsApp users have been able to add photos, videos, text, and GIFs to their WhatsApp Status that show up in the Updates section for their contacts. Now, with the new update, users will be able to complement these posts with music clips of up to 15 seconds for photos and up to 60 seconds for videos.
When creating a Status, users will start seeing a music note icon at the top of the screen that will let them pick a song from a library of millions, choose the exact part of the song, and add it to their Status update. WhatsApp also states that the Status will be end-to-end encrypted and that no one, other than the contacts, will be able to see what song has been shared, not even WhatsApp.
The update has started rolling out globally, and most users should see the feature on their phones in the next few weeks. With this update, Meta seems to be bringing WhatsApp closer to Instagram as the latter also allows users to add music to their profile and notes.
