WhatsApp, the popular messaging app from Meta, has introduced a new feature: Message Summaries. It utilizes Meta AI to summarize unread messages in a chat. For those unaware, Meta AI functions as an AI-powered assistant in WhatsApp, helping users compose messages, generate images, and perform other tasks.
Using the new Message Summaries feature is simple: just tap the unread messages count, and Meta AI will generate a bulleted summary. According to Meta, the new feature uses Private Processing technology, which works by creating a secure cloud environment to generate summaries. The Private Processing technology also ensures that the generated response is not shared with Meta or any third party. Additionally, other participants in the chat are not notified about the summary.
Message Summaries is an optional feature and is disabled by default. WhatsApp allows users to select which chats can use AI features in the 'Advanced Chat Privacy' settings. Message Summaries is currently rolling out in English for users residing in the United States. Meta plans to bring this feature to more languages and regions later this year.
Apart from Message Summaries, Meta recently announced its plan to show advertisements on WhatsApp. The ads will be visible in the “Updates” tab. Additionally, WhatsApp is bringing channel subscriptions, where users can subscribe to their favorite channels for a monthly fee.
