Almost a couple of months after leaking, the standalone Meta AI app is now available for both Android and iOS, expanding the ecosystem of AI-powered assistants for smartphones.

Meta is increasingly investing in artificial intelligence. The company has the Llama series of AI models and its chatbot called Meta AI. Until now, the chatbot was only available through the company's social and messaging apps. Now, Meta AI is available as a standalone app for Android and iOS.

The ecosystem of AI-powered standalone smartphone assistants is expanding with the arrival of the Meta AI app. A CNBC report from February had leaked its upcoming arrival. More than a year later, you can download it from the Google Play Store and App Store.

A "more personal AI" powered by the Llama 4 AI model

If you've used any of the many AI assistants for smartphones, Meta AI's features will be familiar to you. You can ask it questions, chat, use it for research, generate summaries, and more. The Meta AI app, powered by the Llama 4 AI model, is designed to offer a conversational and voice experience. In fact, the company defines it as a "more personal AI."

Meta AI has equipped its assistant with relatively advanced memory capabilities. It's capable of recalling previous conversations and their context for a more personalized experience. That said, these capabilities are only available in Canada and the US initially.

Meta AI even offers a "Full-Duplex" mode as its approach to the Gemini Live-style continuous conversational experience. This mode is still in the experimental phase and is only available in four countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the US.

Using your social data to personalize your experience

Meta AI has an advantage over other AI assistants, at least for users of the brand's social platforms. It can access your shared data on your social media accounts to offer a more tailored experience. Thus, the chatbot will learn about your hobbies, interests, the type of content you like, and more.

Like other AI assistants, the Meta AI app can both generate images and edit existing ones from a prompt. Lastly, another unique feature of this platform is a Discover feed where users can share their AI prompts with others, bringing the social aspect of Meta's services to the use of AI.
