The ViewDock is a docking solution currently raising funds through a Kickstarter campaign. Right now, early backers can purchase a unit for around $89 after discount. However, potential supporters should carefully review the shipping terms and be aware of the significant financial risks inherent in crowdfunding projects. Whilst the ViewDock probably doesn’t carry a whole lot of technology-related risk, it’s worth noting that an entirely unknown company is behind this campaign.
Measuring 13.7 x 6.2 x 9.6 cm (5.4 x 2.4 x 3.8 in), the ViewDock features a built-in display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 and screen size of 10 x 8 cm (3.9 x 3.1 in). Functioning more or less like an external display, it provides users the flexibility to decide what to show on the screen. For instance, programs like system resource monitors, chat windows or media players can simply be dragged onto the secondary screen.
The ViewDock connects to a host device via USB-C and is compatible with macOS, Windows, and possibly Linux. It also supports USB Power Delivery at up to 100 watts. On the back, the device features two USB 3.0 ports, along with microSD and SD card readers. Whilst positioning the I/O interfaces at the back contributes to a clean aesthetic, it also makes the ports less accessible.
