What if metalworking didn’t require a workshop full of tools? That’s the question xTool presents with the MetalFab – a compact, all-in-one machine designed to combine laser welding, CNC cutting and surface cleaning. xTool claims the MetalFab is the first smart metalworking solution of its kind. It provides guided controls and industrial-grade capability for both newcomers and professionals, its makers claim.
The system supports both manual and automated modes by combining handheld welding and cutting with CNC-guided cleaning and precision engraving. One standout feature is the underwater welding function. According to coverage by Highways.Today, xTool describes this as enabling clean joins “with dry-land quality” in wet environments.
Smart connectivity and an integrated control panel guide users through complex tasks while also offering professionals space to customise. A built-in touchscreen is included. For cleaning, the laser-based system targets rust and paint, thereby replacing traditional methods such as sandpaper or chemical stripping with precision-focused light.
While modular systems like the Snapmaker Artisan offer 3D printing, engraving and CNC milling, they do not support welding or metal surface cleaning. As noted in a 3DPrinting.com review, the Artisan is designed for lighter, modular fabrication. The MetalFab aims to fill that gap by extending functionality to include material shaping, finishing and repair.
The MetalFab is currently available for pre-order via Kickstarter, with the campaign scheduled to end on Thursday, 22 May 2025, at 6:00 PM PDT (Pacific Daylight Time), according to Kickstarter. Pricing on Kickstarter starts at $4,999 USD for the 800W model, with the full 1200W CNC configuration available at $13,999. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices range from $6,999 to $17,999. Retail availability has not yet been confirmed.
Note: Pricing reflects Kickstarter campaign tiers at the time of writing. Final costs may vary depending on availability, shipping region, local taxes (e.g., VAT) and post-campaign retail pricing. xTool also offers flexible installment plans via its website for some configurations.
