Unlocking bootloader: Xiaomi does it better than Samsung despite some caveats

The bootloader on Xiaomi smartphones can be unlocked through official means – no hacks required. This is especially appealing to those who want to install custom firmware such as LineageOS on their Xiaomi, Redmi or Poco phones, including the Xiaomi Poco M8 Pro 5G we recently reviewed.
However, Xiaomi doesn’t make the process straightforward. A global Xiaomi account (rather than a Chinese one) is a basic requirement. The account must also be at least 30 days old. Newer users have no choice but to wait until this period has passed.
Xiaomi’s Mi Unlock tool is the official method. The unlocking process only works if the company gives its approval, which is tied to a user’s Xiaomi account and limited to one device per account. Anyone who wants to unlock the bootloader on a second device will need to create another Xiaomi account with a new phone number.
Application timing
Xiaomi only grants a limited number of permissions each day starting at 12 noon local time in China (UTC+8). Requests must be submitted through the Xiaomi Community app, which requires users to log into their Xiaomi account. Because demand is high, speed is essential. Members of the LineageOS community recommend submitting your application at exactly 12 noon UTC+8 to avoid missing out.
The unlocking process can begin once this hurdle is cleared. Performing a backup is advisable, as unlocking the bootloader will erase all data. Xiaomi has outlined the full procedure in this official blog post.
