In Old World, players take control of an ancient empire and guide their dynasty through wars, intrigues and political power struggles across multiple generations. Unlike the Civilization series, the game focuses on a more narrowly defined historical era and is clearly rooted in classical antiquity.

Players govern cities, command armies, arrange political marriages and respond to events that can shape the course of a campaign for years to come. One of the game’s key distinguishing features is its order system: orders are a limited resource, so rulers must carefully decide which units to move and which cities deserve their investment. In its review, gaming website TestingBuddies (in German) awarded Old World a strong 8 out of 10 and particularly praised its exciting dynasty mechanics, innovative order system and high level of strategic depth. According to the review, the less convincing aspects are the rather unspectacular graphics and the occasionally confusing interface. The fairly steep learning curve may also frustrate newcomers fairly quickly. German gaming magazine GameStar even described the title as a “strategy hidden gem.”

On Metacritic, Old World has a Metascore of 80 and a slightly lower User Score of 7.3. On Steam, sentiment is also positive: 82% of more than 6,100 user reviews recommend the game.

90% discount on Steam

Old World was developed by US studio Mohawk Games and published by Hooded Horse in May 2022. The 4X strategy game normally costs around $40 on Steam, but the current 90% discount reduces the price to $3.99 until April 13. According to SteamDB, the current deal matches the previous lowest price, which was last reached at the beginning of January. On the Steam Deck, the title is rated as “Playable.”
