It doesn’t get much better than this: The Pexarbolt Ultra is a Thunderbolt 5 dock with a touchscreen and arguably the most comprehensive selection of ports on the market.
Memory card manufacturer Lexar has announced a Thunderbolt 5 dock under its Pexar brand that stands out with what may be the best selection of ports on the market as well as a 5-inch touchscreen plus rotary dial. Ahead of the upcoming launch of the PexarBolt Ultra crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, Pexar teases a super-early-bird offer.

For now, this is only a pre-announcement ahead of IFA, but many of the specs and features of the Thunderbolt 5 dock called the PexarBolt Ultra are already known. Although this is not the first dock with a display, it is certainly the most premium one to date. Just recently the Screendock with a 5.5-inch display was launched on Kickstarter, but it can hardly be compared with the PexarBolt Ultra. While the Screendock is an inexpensive USB-C dock, the new Pexar dock will be one of the most premium Thunderbolt 5 docking stations on the market.

22 ports, including 10GbE and an NVMe slot

The number of ports alone is impressive:

  • 3x Thunderbolt 5 (80 Gbps with a boost of up to 120 Gb/s), with 140 watts of power delivery to the host and 15 watts downstream
  • DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1 for two 8K 60 Hz displays or three 4K 144 Hz displays
  • 10GbE port and internal M.2 NVMe SSD slot (PCIe Gen 4x2, 3,600 Mb/s)
  • 5x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps, 7.5W at the rear and 45W at the front)
  • 4x USB-A (2x USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbps and 7.5W, and 2x USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps and 4.5W)
  • CFexpress Type B (10 Gbps), SD 4.0 (312 MB/s), and microSD 4.0 (312 MB/s) slots
  • 3x 3.5 mm audio jacks on the front and rear

The Pexabolt Ultra offers what is arguably the most extensive range of connectivity options of any docking station.

5-inch touchscreen shows you what’s happening

The most unusual feature of this Thunderbolt 5 dock, however, is the dashboard, which shows which devices are connected, how much power is being consumed, and where data is being copied at what speed. The actively cooled dock’s temperature is logged as well. Last but not least there is also a rotary dial that can be used to switch between displays for instance.

Early-bird price of $479

The PexarBolt will be funded via Kickstarter, although the campaign has not started yet. At present, visitors can only sign up on the preview website to be notified when the crowdfunding campaign actually starts. Pexar already revealed the regular and early-bird prices. The Thunderbolt 5 dock will apparently start at MSRP $649 once it reaches stores, whereas the earliest backers will only pay $479 for the Super Early Bird offers. However, they will have to accept the inherent risks of a crowdfunding campaign. The website also details compatibility with various MacBooks and Windows PCs. It is not yet known when the Kickstarter campaign will launch. A similar high-end Thunderbolt 5 dock but without the display was recently launched by Ivanky.
