The Twopan Nano SSD, a flash storage device that is said to be particularly suitable for smartphones, is currently being financed as part of a crowdfunding campaign. However, users should keep in mind that the maximum data transfer rates on many smartphones are likely to be quite limited since it is not uncommon for the USB-C ports to only support data transfer according to the USB 2.0 standard and so at reduced speeds. Of course, the Twopan Nano SSD can also be used on other devices with a USB-C port, such as consoles, tablets, PCs and laptops. A maximum data transfer rate of 450 MB/s is specified, which should allow larger amounts of data to be transferred quickly; USB 3.1 Gen 1 is supported. The model will only be available with a capacity of 512 GB.
At dimensions of 20 x 13 x 5 millimeters, the device is very compact and, at 5 grams, also very light. According to the manufacturer, it is made of aluminum and plastic and meets IP65 standards, meaning it should be able to withstand drops from a height of up to 10 meters. Encryption is supported: The device can be unlocked with your own fingerprint, which may be useful for a storage device that is easily lost, such as a very small USB stick.
Supporters of the Indiegogo campaign are promised a unit for a contribution of at least $78. The financial risks typical of crowdfunding campaigns apply and we would consider this project to be risky. Delivery is scheduled for July; as usual, users should familiarize themselves with the shipping conditions beforehand.
