Trekstor SurfTab Wintron 10.1 Tablet Review
For the original German review, see here.
Trekstor is collaborating with a German daily newspaper to bring out a 10.1-inch "people's tablet" running Windows 8.1 (the SurfTab Wintron 10.1). The test model on our bench is the simplest configuration which means it lacks a 3G modem and an FHD panel. The tablet costs 199 Euros (~$225) and is one of the cheapest 10.1-inch Windows tablets available. We will find out in our review whether a well-rounded tablet could be sold at such a low price.
The competition includes Windows 8.1 tablets from other manufacturers, like the Odys Winpad V10, the HP Pavilion 10-k000ng x2 and the Captiva PAD 10.1 Windows.
Case & Connectivity
The case of the Trekstor tablet is made of black synthetic material. The small borders are encased by a silver border with a small break at the bottom. The back of the tablet has a nice texture: small points adorn the back. The workmanship of the device is good but the tablet could have been a bit sturdier. The tablet deforms too easily for our liking, and it does not have a maintenance flap.
Trekstor has not skimped on the ports: alongside the standard MicroUSB port, Trekstor has included a second, "normal" USB port. The MicroSD-card reader is not easy to find: it is hidden below a flap on the top/back of the tablet. The front webcam (2 MP) is accompanied by a rear camera (5 MP) and the bottom of the tablet offers a docking interface. A separate, optional keyboard is available and costs around 50 Euros (~$56).
The OS is the 32-bit Windows 8.1 with Bing. This is a better choice than the 64-bit version as it requires fewer resources. Furthermore, buyers of the tablet will receive a 1-year license for MS Office 365 Personal. The license allows the user to use the Microsoft Office package on their tablet and a desktop PC/notebook.
Touchscreen
Trekstor has equipped the tablet with a touchscreen panel which supports up to 10 fingers. The screen works without issues and the user should be able to hit the desired button even in desktop mode (after a short period of trial-and-error).
Display
A 10.1-inch reflective display adorns the tablet and offers a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. The tablet is also available with an FHD panel. The brightness is good: 293 cd/m². The contrast (840:1) and black value (0.35 cd/m²) are also quite good.

* ... smaller is better
The colors of the display are quite good. With factory settings, the average DeltaE 2000 deviation is 5.52. This puts the panel quite close to the ideal range (DeltaE smaller than 3). The display has a slight blue tinge.
Trekstor has provided an IPS panel for the SurfTab. These panels offer great viewing angles, which means the screen is legible from all angles. The tablet can also be used outdoors but we recommend a well-shaded area to avoid reflections.
Performance
This 10.1-inch Trekstor tablet offers sufficient performance for office and Internet use. Furthermore, even desktop applications run well on the tablet. Our test model is available for 199 Euros (~$225) but there are other configurations available (with a 3G modem and an FHD panel).
Processor
An Atom Z3735F quad-core CPU operates the tablet at a speed of 1.33 GHz. Turbo allows the CPU to boost its speed up to 1.83 GHz. The CPU can run the single-thread test of the Cinebench benchmark at 1.58 to 1.83 GHz. The multi-thread test runs at a constant 1.58 GHz. The CPU runs the tests at the same speeds whether the tablet is plugged in or running on battery. The low TDP of the CPU (less than 4 W) means that the tablet can be passively cooled.

Storage Devices
Of the 32 GB eMMC storage, the user will have around 20 GB available. The transfer speeds are not great, especially in comparison to the speeds of the storage devices of the Odys Winpad V10 or the HP Pavilion 10-k000ng x2, which are quite a lot faster. The available storage can be extended using a MicroSD card. Additional storage is available online with the Microsoft Cloud service, "OneDrive," which is free for a year.

Graphics Card
The Intel HD Graphics IGP supports DirectX 11 and operates at up to 646 MHz. The results of the 3DMark benchmarks are in the expected region and match those of similar devices, such as the Odys Winpad V10. These results place our test model at the bottom end of the performance table. Similar AMD GPUs, like the Radeon R3 (Mullins/Beema) IGP, offer more performance.

Emissions & Energy Management
Temperatures
The stress test (Prime95 and Furmark run together for at least a hour) is run at the same speed by the tablet when plugged in and when running on battery: in the first ten minutes the CPU runs at 1.5 GHz and the IGP operates at 620 MHz. Afterwards the speeds are lowered so as not to exceed the cooling limits of the tablet. After around 40 minutes, the CPU operates at 833 MHz. This throttling is absolutely necessary as in one area the tablet exceeds the 50 °C mark.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 47.1 °C / 117 F, compared to the average of 33.7 °C / 93 F, ranging from 20.7 to 53.2 °C for the class Tablet.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 55 °C / 131 F, compared to the average of 33.2 °C / 92 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 31.7 °C / 89 F, compared to the device average of 30 °C / 86 F.
Speakers
The stereo speakers are placed on the back of the tablet. The sound is good and loud. An audio jack for headphones and external speakers is available.
Power Consumption
The tablet is very conservative and in idle it hits a max of 5 W consumption. During the stress test, this consumption can rise up to 13.4 W but is at an acceptable level (similar to competitors).

Battery Life
In the practical WLAN test, our script loads various websites every 40 seconds. The "Balanced" mode is turned on (only energy profile available) and the brightness is set to around 150 cd/m². The tablet runs for a good 6 hours and 31 minutes.

Verdict
The Trekstor SurfTab Wintron 10.1 is available for 199 Euros (~$225). This 10.1-inch Windows tablet is capable of running apps from the Windows store as well as standard desktop applications. The device offers good battery life and a bright IPS panel with good viewing angles and strong contrast. The ports include a MicroUSB port as well as a full-sized USB interface. This will allow the user to connect devices such as a printer or a USB keyboard without an adapter. The offer includes a 1-year license for MS Office 365 Personal. Overall, we believe that Trekstor is offering a well-rounded package and if you want to use the tablet with Internet on-the-go, then we recommend the configuration with an integrated 3G modem.
