There’s just no getting around the fact that business laptops are pricey compared to standard consumer-focused devices. If you don’t need business-focused features like Intel’s vPro remote management and security hardware, the pricier Pro version of Windows, or a rugged, road-friendly shell, you can get a similarly equipped consumer laptop for a whole lot less than the $1,429 asking price of this configuration of the Tecra Z40-A.

The Toshiba Tecra-Z40-A1401 ($1,229) blends in pretty well with the rest of the high-end ultraportable laptops currently on the market, for the most part. The Toshiba Tecra Z40-A1401 isn't a bad high-end ultraportable laptop, but for a little more money, you could get a whole lot more.

The Toshiba Tecra Z40-A1401 does little, if anything, to pass the rest of the high-end ultraportable laptops out there, but if that was its only problem it wouldn't be too hard to recommend. However, with systems like the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, our current Editors' Choice, delivering an HD+ plus display and topping it performance-wise for only $70 more, the Z40-A1401 becomes a much harder sell. Even more comparable Windows systems like the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus or the Sony VAIO Pro 13, which can probably be found cheaper than the Z40-A1401 at this point, still end up being the better deals. Users set on the Tecra Z40-A1401 should take the time, and extra money, to customize a better one instead.

For $1,229, the Toshiba Tecra Z40 offers a sturdy design that's lighter than the competition, along with more than 9 hours of battery life. We also appreciate the fingerprint sensor, which is easy to use. However, the dim display on this business Ultrabook underwhelms, and the keys are needlessly smaller than those on competing systems.

Since all three machines feature a Haswell-class CPU, battery life was excellent across the board: at or above 7 hours. The Flex 14, however, lasted a full 26 minutes longer than the Tecra Z40.Toshiba provides a bevy of its own utilities for managing your power consumption, among other things, which some buyers will find useful. For example, the HDD Protection utility automatically moves your hard drive’s head to a “safe position” to prevent damage when the laptop detects vibration. But at the risk of beating a dead horse, that utility wouldn’t be necessary if Toshiba provided an SSD instead of a mechanical hard drive.

Touchscreen Office Notebook. Toshiba hopes this premium Tecra, with a 1080p matte screen and many of the typical amenities of a top-end business notebook, can entice those looking for a touch business computer that’s light and long on battery. Does it check all the boxes?

Toshiba delivered a long-lasting road warrior for $1,479, with enough power for most users, a fingerprint reader and a highly accurate display. I just wish its keyboard delivered a better experience, and that the notebook came with an SSD at this price. Still, the Z40t's speedy performance, durability and security make it a serious contender for mobile executives.

The Toshiba Tecra Z40-B1420 has a lot going for it—a fast, fifth-generation Intel processor, good multimedia performance, and a long-lasting battery. The exterior isn't quite as durable or solidly built as the Dell Latitude 14 7000 Series (E7450), and it feels a little slippery to the touch. And while certainly competitive, its performance on our tests wasn't class-leading. That honor belongs to the Lenovo ThinkPad T450s, which remains our Editors' Choice business laptop; in addition to its stellar overall performance in our tests, it also has a hot-swappable battery and a sturdier build.

Toshiba Tecra Z40-C1420
The Toshiba Tecra Z40-C1420 is a business laptop for those who are looking for mobile, thin and lightweight laptop to do their work when they are on-the-go without having to compromise on performance. The well-built chassis is made from magnesium alloy and the design is sleek and thin. The Tecra Z40-C1420 has a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7-6600U processor, an Intel HD Graphics 520 graphics card, 8 GB of DDR3L RAM and a 500 GB hard disk with 7200 RPM. The laptop sports 14-inch HD screen that is only capable of displaying up to 1366 x 768 pixel resolution hence it is not Full HD. The keyboard included in the laptop is quite comfortable to type on although some comments suggest that its is a little stiff for some people. The touchpad on the other hand is smooth, responsive and easy to navigate with. For connectivity options, the laptop comes with three USB 3.0 ports with USB Sleep and Charge feature, HDMI port, RGB port, an audio combo jack and a memory card reader. It has a convenient weight of just 1.47 kg and its battery life can last up to 9:21 hours based on web surfing via Wi-Fi.Specifications

Toshiba's website says the Tecra Z40-C has "no-compromise mobility," but if you choose this laptop, you'll definitely have to lower your expectations. Though it has long battery life, the Tecra suffers from an uncomfortable keyboard, a stiff touchpad and a dull, low-res display.

ULV integrated GPU (GT2) with 20 EUs found on certain Haswell CPU models.
Intel HD Graphics 5500: Integrated graphics card (GT2) in the Core processors of the Broadwell U-series (15 W TDP).
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
Intel HD Graphics 520: Integrated GPU (GT2) with 24 EUs found on some Skylake CPU models (15 W ULV series).
NVIDIA GeForce 930M: Maxwell based lower mid-range graphics card. The card is based on the GeForce 840M with 384 shaders but reduced core clock speed.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
No weight comment found (one expected)!
66.08%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
