Beyond the realm of nearly identical $300 Netbooks, a new category of 11.6-inch "premium" Netbooks has arisen to offer better performance in a slightly larger body, answering some concerns that limited-use Netbooks raise. An update to last year's T115, the Toshiba Satellite T215D-S1140RD performs like a slightly larger, faster Netbook with better specs and ports. It's definitely a step up, but it may not be enough computer for those with higher expectations.

We're big fans of the Toshiba Satellite T215D's look and multimedia capabilities, and it offers fairly good performance for less than $500. Still, when it comes to AMD-powered 11-inch machines, we prefer Dell's Inspiron M101z. That ultraportable offers a better typing experience and richer sound. And the reigning champ in this category remains the Intel-powered Acer Aspire 1810TZ--if you can find it for sale--which offers more than 8 hours of battery life.

Just because everyone else is doing it doesn't mean it's the right choice for you. Somebody listened to their mother, and this time, that somebody is Toshiba, bucking the Intel Atom-CPU trend and opting for an AMD processor for its 11.6-inch-screened T215D-S1140. The Satellite T215D provides plenty of reasons to spend a little extra on a netbook, with its roomy screen, full-size keyboard and touch pad, and strong performance.

ATI Radeon HD 4225: Onboard graphics card (in the RS880M chipset) that is able to decode HD videos (thanks to the UVD2). Technically a slower clocked HD 4250.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

K125: Slow entry level single core CPU for small and light laptops. Still faster as 1.6 Ghz Atom based systems.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

This is a standard display format for tablet computers or small convertibles. You see more on the screen than on a smartphone but you can't use big resolutions well. On the other hand, mobility is not a problem.

72.33%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
