Toshiba's R200 may be an attractive choice - if aesthetics like glossy metallic trim and soothing blue lights are of the utmost importance to you. Wired: Lightest model in the group. Quick access to ports and control knobs. Tired: Screen is comparably dim and fuzzy. Three-hour, 19-minute battery life is the worst. Price too high for low performance.

70% Toshiba Portege R400-106 review
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
The attractive Toshiba Portege R400-106 ultraportable tablet laptop comes with a sparkling white chassis (wonder where they got that idea from?), with a shiny Toshiba logo on the lid. It's also very tactile, as the Toshiba Portege R400-106 is extremely small and light, at just 304x239x29.5mm and 1.7kg. The Toshiba Portege R400-106 is certainly sophisticated, both in terms of looks and functionality. If you want a tablet PC this is probably one of the most attractive you'll find, it's light, well built and highly secure, but when it comes to the performance, price ratio it doesn't come out on top.

If you’ve ever spent some time with a Tablet PC then you’ll find features you’ll like but more often than not, you’ll come away thinking that it’s just a little too heavy and the battery life doesn’t warrant the extra expense over a standard notebook. Well, Toshiba hasn’t addressed a price issue, as at £1775 (inc. VAT) this is the most expensive tablet we’ve seen in a while but what the company has done is overall the style and power of the machine, turning the R400 into something truly special. Billed by Toshiba as "the symbol of sophistication", it's easy to see why. The crisp black and white look is definitely more sophisticated than the average machine and weighing in at 1.8kg, it’s a machine light enough to carry around with a fair degree of ease. When it comes to usability, we found it well above average.

The Toshiba Portege R400 12.1” tablet is not only good looking, but it’s surprisingly functional. As a lightweight tablet PC, it pushes design and mobility limits, but it’s also not for the faint of pocketbook – the R400 starts at around $2500. Even though it’s got the looks, it can leave some things to be desired for the ultramobile crowd in terms of power and functionality. There are a couple of distinct features of this laptop. First, it uses Microsoft’s Active Notifications technology to let you monitor your email and calendar when the laptop is closed and inactive (but turned on). This was one of the first laptops to use this technology. What this means is that you can watch for new emails and your next appointments without opening up your laptop thanks to a small external screen on the front of the laptop.

Toshiba Portege R400 Tablet PC Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
The R400 is an innovative Tablet, but it comes with a hefty price tag. It has a solid design that works great in Tablet and notebook mode. There is no flimsy feeling to it and the LED backlit screen is great for watching movies or checking out your favorite photos. The screen is glossy and gives off reflections under bright light conditions, so be aware outdoor use won't work. Overall Toshiba could have gone with a more powerful processor because the system runs a little slow, especially since it has Windows Vista Ultimate. I would have liked it to have a little more performance endurance and less eye candy appeal if you could trade such things off. The R400 does sport the SideShow display, which is a unique feature for the business professional on-the-go, but at the end of the day the high price tag and lack of performance to match that price stand in the way of it being a top-competitor for your average consumer.

Toshiba Portege R400 Hands On Review (Video)
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
I have to admit though, I want the R400 to succeed. It does a lot of great things, but in our view it's version 1 hardware that needs to be improved to find a viable market share. Toshiba put two years of engineering into this product and the work shows. There are a lot of impressive features, but the $2600 price tag and a few questionable design decisions make the R400 a tough purchase.

Toshiba's Portégé R400 Has Exciting Features
Source: Tom's Guide English Archive.org version
Toshiba's Portégé R400-S4931 Tablet PC is quite impressive in many ways. It looks great and has a range of new and special features that make it an impressive little notebook computer. Though some of its components are less than stellar performers, Vista Ultimate, unbridled by memory resident programs, runs quite fast in both standard and Tablet PC mode. I'll reserve judgment on performance until I've got some memory resident apps to test out and until Vista-ready notebook performance tests are available, but for now I'm high on Vista on notebooks like Toshiba's R400, if you plan to keep your notebook fairly vanilla.

Although the Portege R300 is an unique slimline laptop, in its category it is not the top of the line. The Core Duo technology and 4200RPM hard drive make it less attractive. However, the design will definitely raise eyebrows and the 2-lbs of weight is an extreme advantage for mobility.

At $3,630 for this particular configuration (cheaper models are available without built-in WWAN), the R500 is in the same price league as the flagship MacBook Air and Lenovo ThinkPad X300. However, even with the mobile-friendly conveniences of a super-light carry weight and long battery life, the R500’s flimsy build and pokey performance make it feel like a much cheaper laptop.

It's a feature, not a flaw: You can twist the Toshiba Portégé R500's screen in your bare hands. Pressing the plastic panel on the bottom of the case underneath the hard drive makes it pop inward. Apple may get all the headlines with its super-thin MacBook Air (reviewed here), but Toshiba's Portege R500-126 trumps it in many areas. True, it can't compete on thickness - the Toshiba Portege R500-126 is 19.5-25.5mm from thinnest to thickest, while the Air is a mere 0.4-1.94mm. Even in terms of price, the R500 stands up well against the Air once you configure the latter with the 64GB SSD drive, coming in at £1,761 to Apple's £2,028. If you're after a usable, super portable machine that weighs hardly anything then the Toshiba Portege R500-126 will make an excellent travel companion.

When we first saw the Toshiba Portege R500 back in the summer of 2007, it quickly became one of our favorite ultraportable laptops--and one of our favorite laptops overall. Thanks to its small size, light weight, and plentiful extras, the R500 was very close to the final word in ultraportable systems. Toshiba's SSD version of the Portege R500 may be the best ultraportable laptop available right now, and it packs in much of what the MacBook Air lacks while weighing nearly half as much.

Ultra portables have carved a niche in the laptop world as the sexy and stylish of all laptops out in the market. They’re small and lightweight, making them the perfect travel companion if you’re a power user who is constantly on-the-go. However, as a result of their compact form factor the ultra portable is sometimes limited in its performance and feature sets, making them a product geared more for the travelling businessman. These machines usually have slower performing processors, lack of any video graphics capabilities, and no optical drive built-in in an effort to save battery power and space.
Toshiba has really brought out many of the world’s firsts in this ultra-portable machine.  It’s currently the thinnest and lightest full-featured ultra-portable you can buy on the market.  And with it, you’ll really stand out and impress passersby.

In the face of it, the Sony TZ12 and the Toshiba Portégé R500 have plenty in common. They weigh practically the same, have similar-sized screens, and share ridiculously tiny dimensions. Both use Intel's ultra-low voltage range of Core 2 Duos and both will happily fit into the very smallest of shoulder bags. Yet while the Sony costs £2,099 (inc VAT), the Toshiba weighs in at nearly £800 less. If you think that means there's no reason to be tempted by the more expensive Sony, though, think again - the R500's build quality is noticeably less impressive than that of the TZ12. In particular, the Portégé's chassis has a plasticky feel, with a little too much flex in the palmrest for our comfort. As such, the R500 is just that little less reassuring when the time comes to stuffing it in a bag or running for that train. The different scale of budget shows through when it comes to usability, too: the keyboard in particular feels noticeably spongy.

Toshiba redefines the ultraportable with the thinnest and lightest notebook with a 12.1-inch widescreen display and an optical drive. One look at the Toshiba Portégé R500 and you know you're in the presence of a breakthrough. Weighing a mere 2.4 pounds, this notebook has all of the makings of a true no-compromise ultraportable. The silver magnesium-alloy chassis is sophisticated chic, and we love the full-sized keyboard that doesn't waste even a centimeter of surrounding space. This superthin, superlight machine is easy to grab and go in a hurry. The lack of mobile broadband is a bummer, and the razor-thin display lacks the punch of some other ultraportables, but overall this is a very good laptop for users who care more about portability than sheer power. At its thinnest point, the R500 measures 0.8 inches thick, widening to one inch on the backside. The subtle wedge design makes the notebook easy to slide into a tote bag.

Perhaps the laptop we've been most looking forward to checking out this year, Toshiba's Portege R500 is very close to the final word in ultraportable systems. Incredibly thin and light, it manages to squeeze a 12-inch display into a package even lighter than Sony's 11-inch VAIO TZ150. While there have been some less expensive ultraportables we've liked recently (such as the Averatec 1579), both the R500 and VAIO TZ are premium products, with configurations ranging from $2,000 to 3,000, thanks to high-end options, including solid state hard drives. While the VAIO and the R500 have similar prices and features, there are trade-offs. We were disappointed by the lack of mobile broadband in our R500, but we also found it offered better performance than the VAIO (largely Sony's fault for packing their system with enough bloatware to slow it to a crawl).

Bottom line: The Toshiba Portégé R500 is a 2.4-pound ultraportable that performs the impressive feat of integrating an optical drive, though the system is strictly made for heavy travel schedules and light workloads. Pros: Integrated optical drive at 2.4-pounds. 120GB hard drive. Sleek design. Full-size keyboard. Three USB ports. LED backlights. Cons: DVD burner generates a lot of noise. Mouse buttons can be a nuisance. You'll need to bump the RAM up to 2GB.

First Class Travelling. The Portégé R500 can be called a prototype of Toshiba's product range. Not only the very interesting equipment - Core 2 Duo U7700 CPU, transreflective LED display, 64 Gigabyte solid state disk, and 3G/UMTS module - hints on this. Furthermore, it is only 810g (!!) light and costs as much as 2,500.- Euro.

If you think of HP’s 2530p as a strapping workhorse of an ultraportable, Toshiba’s R600 is like a stylish, sophisticated cousin—and we were quickly smitten with its charms. The R600 shares much in common with Toshiba’s R500, but with improvements to its build quality and structure. Be that as it may, the Toshiba R600 stands out above the other notebooks here with its supreme portability, while still offering comparable features, a quality build, and a stylish appearance.

Toshiba Portégé R600 Review
Source: Slashgear English Archive.org version
Is the R600 – and 384GB – worth all that extra money? For most users, no. The most obvious application for a huge chunk of fast, solid-state storage is audio and video editing, something the R600’s graphics abilities don’t really lend themselves to, and it’s tough to imagine any businessperson who might have enough presentations, documents and files to occupy such a huge drive. There’s a sense that Toshiba have produced the Portégé R600 half for bragging rights and half because they think they should: because SSDs are getting bigger, and it makes sense to drive the market by slotting them into appealing machines. Perhaps a desktop-replacement notebook would be a more suitable fit, but that would lack the ability to surprise colleagues and friends when you tell them your slender ultraportable has more storage than their home PC and a DVD burner to boot.

Very lightweight and slim, the Toshiba Portégé R600 is the king of mobility. Much more complete than a netbook, it's also much more expensive. We like the matte screen and long battery life. All we can find to criticize is mediocre sound and poor 3D performance.

Before the influx of low-cost Netbooks, small, thin laptops (then called ultraportables) were typically very expensive. Now, however, it's a little trickier to slap a high price on something just because it's small and light. Toshiba is banking on people realizing that small is one thing, but small, secure, and powerful is quite another. The Toshiba Portege R600 may be pricey compared with Netbooks, but it has a lot more to offer beyond its ultraportable size.

Toshiba - Portégé R600-101 review
Source: IT Reviews English Archive.org version
When it comes to ultraportable notebooks, everyone wants to lay claim to producing the thinnest and lightest. Toshiba's R600 updates an earlier thin and light model, the R500. The R600-101 is a real eye catcher, and it is light. But the build quality isn't what it could be and neither screen nor keyboard wowed us. The battery life claim should probably be taken with a large pinch of salt too.

This business ultraportable packs an optical drive into an impressively small and light chassis and lasts over 6 hours on a charge. If your primary need is a secure and superslim notebook that can go the distance, the $2,149 Toshiba Portégé R600-ST520W has a lot to offer. Its 6.5-hour battery life and featherlight weight will certainly be appreciated on business trips. However, its performance is lackluster compared to other ultraportables, and the display is less than stellar. If you don’t need an optical drive, the 1-pound-heavier Lenovo ThinkPad X200s offers superior performance, a higher screen resolution, and four more hours of runtime, for nearly $500 less. But if you demand a headturning design and a DVD drive, this ultraportable is worth the splurge.

Overall, the Toshiba R600 isn’t for everyone, but we should be glad that it exists. Despite a few flaws, Toshiba produced a computer that is relatively competitive with high-end ultraportables like the Dell Adamo, the Sony TT, and the even the ThinkPad X301, but is lighter than almost all of them. That weight savings will cost you–in a number of ways–but if portability is something you value and you want a notebook that will impress your peers, then the R600 is worth keeping in mind. From a bang-for-your-buck standpoint, or for anyone simply looking for a great ultraportable, it is not the best option.

Pick up the Toshiba Portegé R600-108 and you'd be forgiven for thinking that the assembly line had forgotten to install a computer inside the case. But inside nonetheless resides an Intel SU9400, a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor backed up with 3GB RAM and 128GB SSD storage. Overall, the ‘look and feel’ impression swings somewhere between awe at the empty weight – and horror at the huge price for such an insubstantial toy-like notebook. The Toshiba Portegé R600-108 has a good performance benchmark result but a dreadful screen and foreshortened battery life that makes it hard to recommend.

Do you like the idea of notebook that is light and small so you can easily carry it all around? And you don’t like that it has relatively slow CPU and no optical device? What do you say about a notebook that has 12.1 inch display, Core 2 Duo CPU, DVD writer and weighs only 1.1 kg? Well, notebook with these specs actually exists and its name is: Toshiba Portege R600. This little “masterpiece” will impress you the moment you take it into your hands. Although Toshiba Portege R600 is not perfect little notebook, it has some features that make it unique. High price is expected and all we can say is, that it is adequate. Since this model is intended for business users, for whom the price is not that much important parameter, anyone that buys this model will have a lot of reasons to be satisfied with it.

They'll all get you from A to B, but folk will still buy expensive ones, cheap ones, sexy ones, butt-ugly ones - whatever your preference, there's a model for you. If you're after a compact laptop that delivers better performance than a netbook and equivalent portability, and you can afford the price tag, the R600 is worth a look. The Toshiba Portégé R600-S4202 is the sum of four years' worth of improvements, polishing an already proven product. It's the thinnest and lightest ultraportable that squeezes in an optical drive and a full-size keyboard—and its 12-inch LED widescreen isn't too shabby, either. The only thing that can potentially stand between you and commuter heaven is the agonizing $3,000 hit to your bank account. Toshiba's Portégé R600 sets a new standard for lightweight ultraportable laptops, making it an attractive option for workers who need to carry a PC with them. However, this portability comes with the drawbacks of a short battery life, high purchase cost, and a design that feels like it may break unless handled carefully. Toshiba's Portégé R600 is an attractive option for workers needing to carry a laptop with them at all times, but the short battery life limits the amount of work that can realistically be done away from mains power.

Toshiba has thought of just about everything with its gorgeous, sleek, Portégé R600. It’s like an Apple MacBook Air, but with ports…and an optical drive…and (sadly) Windows Vista. In fact, it’s only a hair thicker than the Air (0.77 versus 0.76 inches), and just like the Air, it has that Frisbee-light feel to it. We’re thrilled that Toshiba engineers managed to include all the hardware Apple could not (although the Air does have a larger screen), but at $2,099 for the base model and $2,999 for our tested configuation, the R600 will be an option for only a small segment of the market (and one that continues to shrink with the recession). Toshiba’s ultrasleek ultraportable is a marvel of technology. The 2.2-pound R600 is fully loaded with an optical drive, a solid-state hard drive, good performance—and a very high price.

Toshiba has made some important improvements with the R600, making it an ultra-portable you should definitely consider if you're in the market. However, the transflective screen is still disappointing and you'll need to factor in £100 for an extra battery, so it's not quite a nailed on certainty just yet.

First Class Travelling, the second. The laptop producer Toshiba equips the Portégé decently and sticks to the strengths that we found in our review of March 2008. Thankfully, the worksmanship, the design and the material used have not been changed. Even on the hardware side, the processor, the graphics card, and the RAM were not changed much. In this review you will find out what has changed.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip with shared memory on Mobile Intel 915GM chipset. It is the predecessor of Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The performance can be compared with the Mobile Radeon 9000 (with a 64 bit memory bus).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.

Intel Pentium M: With Intel chip set (855 or 915) and Intel WLAN also available with the name Centrino (name for the package).
In the comparison very fast per megahertz and very modest with weaknesses in floating point operations.
It is also available as a low voltage version with very small current consumption.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

SU9400:

Power efficient low voltage processor based on the Penryn 3M core that features all Penryn functions like Virtualization and Trusted Execution.

76.18%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
