Toshiba's Excite X10 remedies many of the problems of its predecessor the, Thrive 10, but we're not convinced it has what it takes to succeed when the majority of Android tablets struggle commercially. Performance is good, build quality is decent and it's light, but claims of superlative thinness ring hollow when other tabs are already painfully slim and the magnesium alloy finish doesn't have that premium metallic feel some buyers are after.

The most valuable feature of the Toshiba Excite 10 LE is its light and ultra thin body that features a stylish design. Overall the tablet delivers a good user experience, with a good quality display and regular performance. We have to keep in mind that it was introduced on the market a few months earlier than the fastest and newest Tegra 3- powered Android tablets launched in the past two months. Still, none of the latest 10-inch tablets are so light and thin and so elegant.

The filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson once wrote, "Everyone's born with one special thing." The Excite 10 LE has that one special thing. Its light and slim build stand out from the crowd of similar $450 tablets. But that isn't enough to overcome the competition. The Asus Transformer TF300 (Best Deal: $399.99 at P.C. Richard & Son) costs only $379, is just a wee bit thicker, and is much better for gaming thanks to its quad-core processor. The new Apple iPad (4.5 stars), at $499, has a far superior screen and a much broader library of tablet-centric applications. And Toshiba itself has the Excite 10 coming soon, with a quad-core processor in the same body for $500. That gives the Excite 10 LE a pretty slim niche in a crowded Android tablet market.

In the land of tablets, thin doesn't always get the win. Although the Toshiba Excite 10 LE offers a sleek, slim design and solid performance, we couldn't look past the highly visible gridlines on the display, slow camera, and $529 price tag. For $30 less, consumers can go home with a 16GB iPad, or the ASUS Transformer Prime with its quad-core Tegra 3 CPU and Nvidia graphics. Overall, the Toshiba Excite 10 LE is simply not worth the premium.

The Toshiba Excite 13 is an expensive outlier. If you want to look at Web-based recipes from across the room or play Netflix on the largest possible portable screen, it'll satisfy you. But most people will be better served by a laptop, a less-expensive tablet, or even a small TV.

In spite of these weaknesses, Toshiba deserves credit for taking a chance on the 13.3-inch tablet design. For entertainment, as well as for document creation and consumption, the Excite 13 is like no other tablet available today. But the price of admission is steep.

The Toshiba Excite 7$188.44 at Amazon would make a decent $99 tablet, but competitors at its $169 price point beat it easily. It doesn't have 720p screen resolution like the Hisense Sero 7 Pro, nor does it match the graphical power of the $129 Nook HD$99.99 at Best Buy or $149 Dell Venue 7$149.99 at Dell. While it isn't awful, it just can't keep up with the competitors in its price range—not to mention slightly more expensive, far more powerful tablets like the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7"$229.00 at Amazon and Google Nexus 7£129.99 at Amazon Marketplace.

Last year, the $169 Toshiba Excite 7 could have been an acceptable budget tablet, but competitors now offer better features for less money. The ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 has an HD screen, double the storage, and much better endurance, for $40 less. While we appreciate the Excite 7's stock Android experience, its respectable battery life and powerful audio, there are better budget tablet bargains to be had.

The Toshiba Excite 10 SE is a fine Android tablet, it just lacks the stand-out features or low price that set most top-notch competitors apart. The Asus Transformer Pad TF300 offers the same performance for the same price, but also has the ability to add on an excellent keyboard dock, turning it into a productivity powerhouse. Android enthusiasts will likely be happier spending $50 more for the Nexus 10, while those who don't care either way should check out the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9". The Barnes & Noble Nook HD+$269.00 at OfficeMax could even make a nice alternative with a lower price tag, sharp display, and recent addition of Google Play.

Toshiba eXcite Pro AT10LE-A-108
Toshiba's new 10-inch Android tablet, the Excite Pro, is geared towards high-end users who want maximum performance. Performance is the main selling point of this product – with its top of the line 1.8 GHz Tegra 4 chip. The IPS display features a unique and very fine resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. Currently, the tablet is the best one in performance and display. Toshiba even installed what they call a companion core to decrease power consumption during less intensive tasks. Unfortunately, the high-performance components empty the battery faster than most other devices. Another extremely desirable feature is the MicroSD slot, which allows expanding the storage capacity by up to 64 GB. In addition, the Excite Pro is also one of the first tablets supporting the high-speed standard 802.11 for higher speeds and improved connection stability.
The device is undeniably premium in price and specs, but look and feel could be better. With a height of 10,5 mm and a weight of 630 g, it is cumbersome and thick. The silver colored plastic casing on the back creaks and deforms from pressure, which is quite disappointing. The surface has a fine point structure to improve haptics and grip. If high performance is needed, there are no better options available at the moment.

With Tegra 4 to the top? All good things are worth waiting for: Nvidia's Tegra 4 SoC celebrates its long awaited debut. Toshiba's new 10-inch tablet Excite Pro combines the high-end chip with a high-resolution WOXGA display, tremendously fast 802.11 ac radio and speakers by Harman/Kardon. Our test reveals what other highlights the newcomer has in store.

As we initially touched upon, the keyboard and case combination of the Excite Pro makes for a viable laptop replacement - albeit a businessy looking one - but one less elegant than the likes of the Asus Transformer Pad TF701T. Toshiba has made a good, solid product in the Excite Pro, but it's not one that makes us want to jump around abound with excitement because, while decent, where's the unique selling point? What is likely to shift it is the association of a super-high resolution screen - the same resolution as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 - at a price that is just about on par with its competitors.

Although the Toshiba Excite Pro is a speedy Tegra 4 tablet with a high-res display and great audio, it lags behind similarly priced competitors when it comes to design and battery life. For just $20 more, you can get the ultraslim and water-resistant Sony Xperia Z, which has much longer endurance and more features, such as the ability to control your TV.

Toshiba Excite Write
The Toshiba Excite Write is one of the fastest machines in the market with its quad-core, 1.8 GHz, Nvidia Tegra 4 chip and 2GB of RAM. It also features a unique 2,560 x 1,600 IPS display which is MORE than full HD. This tablet's display is unbelievably sharp with crisp details unlike any other. As should be expected, graphics and gaming performance is extremely impressive, with smooth game play and fast load times. It easily handles switching between multiple tasks and apps, and web browsing is as very smooth. This device outperforms the competition in these aspects by far. Unfortunately, this is where the accolades end.
The Harman Kardon branded stereo speakers are placed where hands will cover it and the volume just is not high enough. Battery life is only decent, which is expected when considering the components. With its premium price, one would expect a premium feel. Unfortunately, the Toshiba Excite Write is disappointingly big and bulky, with a plastics feel. Let's turn to its main selling point: A stylus with active digitizer that features 1024 pressure points and what Toshiba calls a "pen and paper” feel. While it may draw attention - the sad fact is, apps that fully exploit both the potentially brilliant stylus and the high resolution just don’t exist yet.
The bottom line is that the Toshiba Excite Write features an exorbitant price, and all the impressive hardware just does not cut it. The recommendation is to wait for the next batch of Tegra 4 powered devices and apps to improve upon what Toshiba has attempted to achieve with the Excite Write.

The Toshiba Excite Write Tablet is a nice bit of kit, but in this crowded space it needs to be more than nice to stand out. At £450 without the keyboard case, it’s putting itself directly against the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 with its stylus and similar specs, and it’s a battle the Excite Write can’t quite win. The benchmarks and deeper stylus integration are both clear wins for the Note. If you dislike the Samsung UI, it’s a good alternative to the Note 10.1, but it won’t be most people’s first choice.

On paper, the Excite Write comes off like a premium product loaded up with top-shelf specs that more than merits the $600 price tag. How it fares when it's actually in hand, however, is another matter. Turns out, Toshiba's asking price is more of a warning sign than a high-end designation.

If you're considering the Write for its bundled active digitizer pen, I'd recommend going with the Galaxy Note 10.1 instead. Samsung's TouchWiz may seem bloated to many, but the multitasking and built-in pen support are far better than what Toshiba offers. If you're more interested in getting a taste of Nvidia's Tegra 4 power, Toshiba makes the Excite Pro, which is essentially the Write sans pen support for $100 less. For now, the Apple iPad remains our top pick for large-screen tablets, for its tried-and true design and its superior collection of tablet apps.

Toshiba's Excite Pure is one of the most affordable 10-inch android tablets on the market but it makes a few too many compromises to make it a great value. Toshiba did manage to keep things like a micro HDMI and microSD card slot for better expansion. The problem is that it lacks many features like a rear camera, high resolution display or even competitive battery life that can be found in less expensive 7-inch tablets.
