A lot has changed in smartphone tech since we reviewed the Xiaomi Black Shark 2. OEMs are now starting to bring 5G handsets into the mainstream, while high volumes of RAM are also becoming the norm for Android smartphones. A rumor a few days ago pointed to the Black Shark 3 covering these off with 5G connectivity and 16 GB of RAM, but that was never going to be the only innovations that Xiaomi made for its next gaming smartphone.
Now, it seems that the Black Shark 3 will have a next-generation display too. Reposted to Slashleaks from Weibo by BG MASTER, the two photos below detail the resolutions and refresh rates that the device will offer. Apparently taken from a prototype, the photos show options for 1080p and 2K resolutions, along with 60 Hz, 90 Hz and 120 Hz refresh rates. According to the photos, Xiaomi will integrate dynamic resolution and refresh rates too. Doing so would undoubtedly reduce power consumption and improve battery life. However, having an option for a dynamic refresh rate also implies that the device can fix its display to 90 or 120 Hz, unlike the most recent iPad Pros.
No release date has been set for the Black Shark 3, but we doubt that it will arrive before the Mi 10 does. The latter is expected to appear next month, so a late Q1 or Q2 2020 release for the Black Shark 3 is probably more likely.
