The Spectra smartwatch combines premium customizability and right to repair for hardware enthusiasts
Despite a history of delayed products and backers receiving damaged units, Pocuter has recently launched its Kickstarter campaign for its upcoming Spectra Smartwatch. With a focus on the right to repair, the Spectra employs an ESP32-S3, a premium aluminum frame, and a host of sensors to provide a welcoming experience to hardware enthusiasts. Super early bird units are available for around $217, which is a compelling offer for users willing to gamble on the prospect of Pocuter delivering the watch.
The Spectra's CNC'd aluminum housing is held together with only seven screws to provide maximum accessibility to the internals. Furthermore, Pocuter has designed every piece of the internals to be modular, making repairs simple and easy. For those who would like a more premium case, Pocuter offers a stainless steel watch variant, adding strength and appeal.
For the internals, the Spectra runs on an ESP32-S3 with maxed specs, including 8 MB of RAM and 32 MB of flash storage. Paired with this is an NRF52832 co-processor to help increase the watch's battery life, which Pocuter claims to be weeks, as well as aid in the device's Bluetooth connectivity and efficiency. Thankfully, users aren't limited to the 32 MB of flash storage, as the watch features a micro SD card slot that can expand storage up to 512 GB.
Spectra watch will also feature a 368x448 OLED display to provide a rich visual experience to the user. However, no hacker watch would be complete without an abundance of I/O, which Spectra watch delivers. The following is the current list of what to expect in the final release of the Spectra watch.
- Microphone
- Speaker
- Magnetic encoder crown
- Magnetometer
- Four programmable buttons
- PPG Sensor
- Gyro & Accelerometer
- NFC antenna
- Vibration motor
The watch will run on Pocuter's SpectraOS, which will feature hardware abstraction to ensure backward compatibility for future device iterations. This also means that users will not have to worry if their apps will be compatible with new versions of the watch. With this level of foresight, it is clear that Pocuter is developing a watch platform for the ages despite the Spectra being currently in development.
