The Xperia 5 II may be Sony's latest smartphone, but it was not the first of its product stack to receive Android 11. That accolade goes to the Xperia 1 II Xperia 1 and Xperia 5, which began receiving Google's latest OS in December 2020 last week. Sony, to its credit, released Android 11 to those devices a month ahead of schedule, which is unusual for an Android OEMs. However, Sony does have a habit of dropping its older and cheaper smartphones quickly, with some recent devices left stranded without a single OS update.
Nonetheless, Sony has finished the Android 11 update for the Xperia 5 II and has pushed it to devices in Asia, Europe and Russia. The update to look out for is 58.1.A.1.178, which is a 709.7 MB over-the-air (OTA) download.
Unfortunately, it is unclear what Sony has changed with Android 11, nor what security patch 58.1.A.1.178 contains. If the Android 11 update is yet to arrive on your handset, then it should do within the next few days. Sony released the Xperia 5 II on Android 10, so it should receive at least one more OS update to Android 12. There was a rumour that the Xperia 5 II would receive three OS upgrades, but Sony has not confirmed this at the time of writing.
