To kick off the SIms 4 25th birthday campaign, the Sims 4 team has made some visual upgrades to the free-to-play base game. This update also includes some welcomed bug fixes to various expansion packs.

The Sims franchise has been out for an impressive 25 years, and to commemorate The Sims, the Sims team will release free content and host events until the grand birthday finale on February 25th. The January 14th update is the first update to the base game, which has dropped many gameplay improvements and changes to the game's UI. Here are a few highlights of what is new in The SIms 4.

The January 14th update brought the most under-the-hood upgrades to the game's performance, bug fixes, and changes to the UI, including:

  • A completely new Main Menu
  • Smoother gameplay on PC, console, and Mac
  • Optimized graphics for Mac and PS4
  • Memory efficacy upgrades

For the home screen, the Sims team appears to have taken inspiration from the lobbies of Apex Legends, Fortnite, and similar games by placing characters in the center of the screen and having them perform random animations. This change is unsurprising, considering the recent push to adopt other aspects of the battle royal model, like weekly login bonuses and seasonal events. The new UI likewise caters to this change in gameplay structure.

The update also renovated all the townie homes in the Willow Creek and Oasis Springs worlds. This refresh includes completely new structures and interior overhauls to breathe new life into these now ten-year-old virtual structures. However, Simmers, who are not starting a new save file, will have to manually download all of these new lots and manually place them if they'd like to see the updated structure. More information on changes to the townie homes, UI, and the complete list of bug fixes are available below.
