According to a new report, Xiaomi is likely to skip the name "Mi 7" entirely and launch its next flagship as the Mi 8 instead. This device is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Xiaomi is set to unveil its next flagship device anytime now. The device has, before now, been referred to as the Mi 7 but it would appear that the Chinese company could skip that number entirely and release it as the Mi 8.

According to the source, a supposed ITK with the handle "Mocha RQ", the Mi flagship will make the jump from 7 to 8 in a bid to align the line's naming scheme with Xiaomi's anniversary. This year marks Xiaomi's 8-year anniversary—a fact that really puts the company's growth into perspective.

This wouldn't be the first time we see a skip in model numbers. Samsung skipped the Galaxy Note 6, OnePlus ignored the OnePlus 4, and ZTE was about doing the same with the Axon 8, although that's pretty much dead in the water now, sadly.

The Mi 7—or Mi 8, if the source is to be believed—will be powered by a Snapdragon 845 and will likely feature some form of facial recognition and wireless charging.

Meanwhile, live images of the device surfaced a few days ago. Here they are.
