MediaTek's comeback has been rather impressive. Starting with the Helio G90T that debuted on the Redmi Note 8 Pro and on to the class-leading Dimensity series, MediaTek has fought back from oblivion to become solid contenders in a market traditionally dominated by Qualcomm. The Taiwanese company is looking to continue on that path, too.
MediaTek has now announced that it will release a new chipset soon. On January 20, to be exact. The chip in question will be the Dimensity 1200, and will slot in above the popular Dimensity 1000+ as MediaTek's flagship SoC.
The Dimensity 1000+ offered most of the performance of the Snapdragon 865, but at a more affordable price point. The Dimensity 1200 should be more of the same. We don't quite expect it to match the Snapdragon 888 but it should marginally outperform the Snapdragon 865 while being cheap enough to be used in mid-range devices. That's a win-win for everyone.
