The Galaxy Fold looks like it is being deprioritized in favor of the Galaxy Note 10

A Samsung official speaking to The Korea Herald has poured cold water on any suggestions that the Galaxy Fold could be relaunched in July, as has been suggested. When asked whether it could be expected to launch next month, the official replied "we would be doing something now" in terms of marketing. The official went on to add that "Nothing has progressed since the April delay," which seems to indicate that Samsung could be rethinking the design of the Fold altogether.

Samsung's lack of apparent urgency around the Galaxy Fold relaunch also aligns with US carrier AT&T's decision to cancel its Galaxy Fold pre-orders last week. As carriers typically know of OEM plans for device launches well in advance, it is telling that one of the largest US carriers would pull the pin on pre-orders if Samsung didn't believe a launch was imminent. What that means for the launch of the Galaxy Fold at any stage this year is anyone's guess.

While the Galaxy Fold was supposed to be Samsung's halo product of 2019, there has been increasing interest in Samsung's erstwhile forthcoming flagship the Galaxy Note 10. As renders of the device have leaked showing ultrathin bezels, customer interest has started shift towards the Galaxy Note 10 and away from the Galaxy Fold. Given that the Galaxy Note 10 is also a much more realistically affordable proposition for most, it makes sense that Samsung should refocus customer attention on the Note 10.

Let's hope the Galaxy Fold still launches in 2019, even if it is in Q3 or Q4. With the Mate X now indefinitely postponed as well, it might be the only foldable phone that could hit the market this year with a chance of helping to move the concept into the mainstream.
