Introduced earlier this year, the Sora AI model for generating videos from text has moved up to Sora Turbo, which is much faster. Now, it comes as a standalone product available at Sora.com for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. The videos generated can be up to 1080p in resolution and 20 seconds long (or shorter).

OpenAI has unveiled Sora back in February as a new AI model capable of creating realistic video content from text input. Described as "a foundation for AI that understands and simulates reality," Sora has just received a solid update. The new version, Sora Turbo, is now available as a standalone product that can be used by ChatGPT Plus and Pro users on Sora.com.

In addition to the video-generation features on Sora.com, users can also check out the Featured and Recent feeds that are being updated daily with the creations of the community. When creating videos, Sora can also handle images and videos as prompts, not just text. While the videos generated are limited to 20 seconds and 1080p, users can also take advantage of their own content to extend, remix, and blend. However, the resolution mentioned above is available for those on the Pro plan. ChatGPT Plus users can only generate videos up to 720p. Thankfully, these capabilities come without incurring additional costs.

Those worried about the malicious use of Sora should keep in mind that videos come with C2PA metadata and safeguards such as visible watermarks by default and an internal search tool that makes it easy to verify if content comes from Sora. Obviously, sexual deepfakes and child abuse materials are being blocked. Uploads of content that features real people are limited for the time being as well.

Although it was released in late March, so it doesn't cover the latest developments, the 22-page guide Introducing OpenAI’s Sora: The Future of Video Production can still be quite useful to help new users get started. It currently can be acquired for $2.99 and comes for free with Kindle Unlimited, but is only available in digital format.
