Tesla windshield wipers can be fully controlled from the steering wheel at long last
The new Tesla 2023.20 update brings one of the most required new features, or, rather fixes, that Tesla drivers have been demanding for ages, namely direct windshield wiper speed control from the steering wheel.
Elon Musk recently inferred that the erratic Tesla wipers behavior that can send them wiping vigorously on a sunny day while driving on Autopilot because a bug squashed on the windshield, or get them tricked by bright lights at night, could be due to deficiencies in the camera software.
The automatic weather conditions detection system that turns the wipers on is "one of the last neural nets Tesla is updating from a single camera, single frame NN to surround video," he added. The so-called Auto wiper V4 update brings surround video that takes into account more camera inputs from more angles to introduce higher precision.
Just in case, Tesla is now giving users more control over their own windshield wipers than ever. Instead of just the much maligned touchscreen controls or the auto mode, in April it introduced the ability to press the button on the left stalk to engage manual control of the windshield wipers, and adjust their speed by pushing the scroll wheel on the left.
With the 2023.20 update, however, Tesla finally offers full windshield wiper steering wheel control directly, be it for adjusting the wipers' speed, turn them on or off, or place them in automatic wiping mode. Upon receiving the update, the windshield wiper steering wheel control customization can be accessed via the Controls > Display setting.
